Of Tulips Past

Tulips, Flowers, Garden, Sepia, Monochrome

These tulips have long past, but their memory lives on in digital form. Long live the tulips!

As you can see from the cropped, color image of this same stand of tulips on the right, they were two-toned in color – not your typical red or yellow. Ironically, I thought the unique, contrasting colors made them good candidates for a monochrome treatment.

To me, the detail in the petals are much more interesting in a higher contrast B&W.  In fact, I think this would make an impressive, large print. May have to do that.

Daffodils Today – Tulips Tomorrow

Daffodils, Yellow, Green, Flowers, Spring, Tulips

The daffodils were the early bloomers in this bunch, photographed at a local park, but the tulips are soon to follow.

For the locals who want to know where these were found – I snapped these beauties in Kewaunee, on the corner of the park by the harbor.

Brazenly Delicate

Tulip, Red, Garden, Tulips, Flower
This red tulip seemed to be taking a bold stand among another group of purple and white tulips. This is another flower I captured a couple of years ago at the annual Tulip Festival held in Pella, Iowa.

Deep red colors, like this tulip, can be a challenge for photographers because most cameras have a tendency to over-saturate the red and the image will loose all it’s detail; it can turn out looking like one big blob of red, with no texture or definition.  Most of my post processing on this image was working to control the red.

Splash of April Color

Tulips, Spring, Garden, Colorful

The tulip’s vivid colors and endless varieties are a most welcome sight of springtime in these parts.  This cluster of beauty was photographed a couple of years ago during the Tulip Festival in Pella, IA.

I’ve had a bunch of tulips from the festival on my computer patiently waiting to be processed.  With a bit of warmer weather and the prospect of blooming flowers on the horizon, I was reminded of the photo treasures I had yet to process and post.  I’ll have to get to more of them in the future.

Ladies In Red

Tulips, Spring, Red, Yellow, Flowers, Macro
If you’re looking for springtime beauty with vivid color, it’s hard to beat tulips.  These unique, deep red beauties, surrounded by a sea of  pink, yellow-fringed tulips were photographed during the annual Tulip Festival in Pella, Iowa.

I struggled with this image. I spent a lot of time trying to get the five red tulips to stand out from the background.  The colors are close enough, it’s hard to distinguish the detail of the foreground from the blur of the background. I’m not sure I achieved the separation I wanted the average viewer to experience. I’ve looked at it so much, I can no longer be objective. You’ll have to decide and let me know your first impression.
