Move it from the Middle
Always
centering on your subject can get dull. You can make a ho-hum
photo more interesting just by placing your subject
off-center. This technique, popular with all visual artists, is called the
"Rule of
Thirds."
Here's
how the rule of thirds works. Imagine the scene in your viewfinder divided into thirds, both horizontally and
vertically (like a Tic-Tac-Toe board). The four points where the
lines intersect are referred to as "power points" and are good places
for positioning your main subject. Which point you choose depends
on the rest of the elements within your picture.
Since most cameras focus
on what's in the middle of your viewfinder, slightly depress your
shutter release button with your subject in the center of your
viewfinder to lock the focus
on your subject. Then, before snapping the photo, re-frame the shot.
