Angel in the Works

Fireworks, Reflection, Angel, Kewaunee

Here’s a happy photography accident.  To me, it looks like an angel in white showed up to take part in the festivities during the fireworks display above the harbor at Kewaunee, Wisconsin.  This image was captured during their July 3rd celebration of Independence Day 2023.

This is not any kind of photo magic. This is the way the separate rocket bursts were recorded. Love the colors.

Big Harry Fireworks Display

Fireworks, Harbor, Kewaunee, Tug Boat

This is an unusual fireworks capture from the Fireworks display on July 3rd in Kewaunee, WI.  This is one of my favorite perspectives of the Kewaunee show – from the west end of the harbor.

There’s a lot I like about this image.  The fireworks burst is has an unusual color and flow.  I love the reflections on the harbor. If you look closely, you will see a few tiny white dots. They are stars in the night sky. And, of course, the Tug Ludington all lit up in the foreground. Also note the bluish dot above the water near the middle of the photo. That is the light from the Kewaunee lighthouse.

Fireworks Over Manistique

Fireworks, Manistique, MI, Night

The fireworks were fabulous over Manistique, Michigan as they celebrated the 4th of July weekend. (07/03/22). Manistique is a small town on the shores of Lake Michigan in the Upper Peninsula of the state of Michigan.

This photo was actually taken by my wife, Sara.  I set the camera up and gave her the remote shutter button.  She wasn’t quite sure what she was doing, since this was her first time. I think she did a great job…with the help of a great teacher.

Where There’s Smoke

Night, Fireworks, Smoke, July 4th, Kewaunee, WI
A lot of smoke from previous bursts added a dramatic effect to the sky for this cluster of fireworks at the annual Independence Day celebration at Kewaunee, WI.

As I mentioned in my previous post, the weather was very pleasant – in fact a perfect night on the lake shore – but there was little air movement. What little air movement there was, moved toward us from the direction we were viewing the fireworks. As a result, the smoke from the fireworks hung in the air and, as you can see here, obstructed our view at times. Still, a great time was had by all.

Color and Chaos

Fireworks, 4th of July, Independence Day, Kewaunee, WIThe rockets red glare and the bombs bursting in air gave proof through the night that the spirit of Independence Day was alive and well in Kewaunee, WI.  This well attended fireworks show is part of Kewaunee’s annual celebration.

The weather was wonderful for enjoying an evening with friends on the shore of Lake Michigan.  For the photographer in me, I could have used a bit more of a breeze at our backs.  That would have cleared the smoke away better, giving us an unobstructed view of the color and chaos.

Burst of Elegance

Fireworks, Burst, Blue, White, Night, 4th of July, July 4th
The patterns and colors of fireworks bursts can create their own fine art that is beautiful, interesting and elegant.

I know I enjoy fireworks more than most – or at least, photos of fireworks.  It’s the rich colors and unpredictable burst patterns, contrasting with the dark background, that I find very appealing. This is a good example of a fireworks image that captivates my attention.  Am I the only one?

Colorful Kewaunee Fourth

Fireworks, Beach, Kewaunee, 4th of July, Spectators
A crowd of wide-eyed spectators watch the Fourth of July fireworks show from Selner Beach in Kewaunee, Wisconsin.  Along with the booming colors the crowd was serenaded by the gentle, rhythmic sound of Lake Michigan waves on the shore.

I enjoy photographing fireworks. I particularly enjoy capturing the fine detail.  Unfortunately, you have to really zoom in to see the kind of detail I’m talking about. Fortunately, with the large megapixels of today’s cameras, you can see some amazing detail when you enlarge the image.  You won’t be able to see that kind of detail in this image, but you can view a larger version to get a better, overall view by clicking on the photo. Beachside Spectacular

Fireworks, Spectators, Kewaunee, WI, July 4th, 4th of July, Beach
One of the best vantage points for the 4th of July fireworks display in Kewaunee, Wisconsin is a blanket or comfortable chair on the beach. Kewaunee is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan.

I’ve photographed the fireworks in Kewaunee many times, but I usually do so from a spot on the harbor. I like capturing the reflection of the firework’s colors on the water’s surface. (Check some of the previous Kewaunee fireworks posts on this site HERE) This year, I decided to try a different location, joining the spectators on the beach.

The fireworks are discharged from the pier that stretches out into the lake.

Red Sky at Night

Fireworks, Red, 4th of July, Kewaunee, WI, ReflectionWhen it comes to fireworks, my favorites are the big ones – the huge bursts of color that fill the sky. This is a big red one from the July 4th celebration at Kewaunee, WI. 2014.  A few days ago, I posted another full-sky burst:  Burst of Blue.  To see even more fireworks shots, click on the “Fireworks” category in the left-hand margin of this page.
