Hear Me Roar

Algoma

Peace Unto You

Lighthouse, Harbor, Wisconsin, Lake Michigan, Sunrise, Clouds, Blue
A beautiful September, Lake Michigan sunrise as viewed from the Algoma, Wisconsin harbor.

This is actually three individual photos I “stitched” together to make a wider, panoramic view.

It’s been awhile since I’ve been able to catch a nice sunrise behind the Algoma lighthouse.  When I looked out the window and realized the sky might be cooperative, I packed up and headed out.  I got there just in time and get several good images.  Watch for more in the future.

Misty Morning Boardwalk

Boardwalk, Algoma, WI, Bench, Fog, Mist, Foggy, Misty, Blue
As dawn begins to break over the Crescent Beach boardwalk in Algoma, WI, a light fog mutes the colors and quiets the light.

I left home by 4:30 to catch the sunrise at Algoma.  But, as you can see, the sunrise was not to be seen.  Well, not as I was expecting, anyway.

Morning Smoke Signals

Lighthouse, Algoma, WI, Sunrise, Lake Michigan
The dark, wispy clouds reminded me of puffs of smoke hanging over the Algoma, Wisconsin lighthouse and pier. This view was photographed last Sunday morning just before the sun emerged from behind the bank of low clouds to rise over Lake Michigan.

As always, I encourage you to click on the photo here to view a larger version in a new browser tab.

Life of the Party

Fireworks, Reflection, Colorful, Burst, Algoma, WI, Shanty Days
This fireworks burst certainly provided a festive atmosphere.  It was part of the fireworks show that is the traditional finale of the Shanty Days celebration in Algoma, WI.

This year’s event was added fun because I was joined by a other photographers, sharing tips and techniques. All came away with some great shots.

This is one of those photos that it pays to view the larger, full-screen version.  To do so, click on the photo.

Time Traveler

Wheel, Steering Wheel, Mirror, Antique, Car, Auto, Automobile
You can’t beat a well restored antique car to keep a guy’s interest.  I love the shine of the brass and the controls on the steering column.  I’m convinced, if you stare into the rear-view mirror, before long, you’ll begin to see the past.

I snapped this image at the annual car show that’s held every spring in Algoma, Wisconsin.  I’m not sure the make and model of this auto.  I should probably take notes while I’m shooting.

Break of Dawn (vintage)

This is an image that dates back a few years.  I was searching for it on this website and was surprised that I had never posted here.  It’s a digitally enhanced version of one of my most popular images – Break of Dawn.  (See the original HERE)  The original is a wonderful color image.  It would be my favorite of the two, but I also like the aged look this one receives from the monochrome and textured effects.

Heaven’s Lake

Lake, Fishing, Clouds, Sky, Lake Michigan
This is an early morning view of Lake Michigan – taken from the shore at Algoma, WI.  I was there to photograph the lighthouse at sunrise.  There were a few boats trolling close by and the opening in the clouds caught my eye.

Weathered

Algoma, WI, Lighthouse, Winter, Cold, Frozen, Ice, Lake Michigan
The evidence of a harsh winter clings to the Algoma, Wisconsin lighthouse and pier. This is a view from Algoma’s harbor, on the western shore of Lake Michigan.

The title not only referrers to ice and snow, but to the pinkish color of the lighthouse as well. Typically, the Algoma lighthouse (or pier light) is a vibrant red.  However, an inferior paint, applied a few years ago, has faded to a chalky pink. Thankfully, I’ve heard a fresh coat of paint is planned later this year.

The Churning

Algoma, WI, Rough Seas, Lake Michigan, Algoma, Winter, Snow, Ice
This is not my typical lighthouse photo from Algoma, WI. A spell of very cold temperatures created considerable ice along the shore and  powerful Lake Michigan winds churned up a torrent of wave action with spectacular splashes.
