Springing to Life
Rising from the dead leaves remaining from autumn, we find the crocus. This is one of the very first signs of spring. I photographed these welcome beauties sprouting in northwest Missouri at the beginning of March 2024.
According to Wikipedia… “Crocuses are low growing plants, whose flower stems remain underground, that bear relatively large white, yellow, orange or purple flowers and then become dormant after flowering. Many are cultivated for their flowers, appearing in autumn, winter, or spring. The flowers close at night and in overcast weather conditions. The crocus has been known throughout recorded history, mainly as the source of saffron. Saffron is obtained from the dried stigma of Crocus sativus, an autumn-blooming species. It is valued as a spice and dyestuff, and is one of the most expensive spices in the world.”

Yellow In Season
A sight for sore eyes. These sunflowers will brighten up anyone’s day. These were found blooming in a farm field in northeast Wisconsin.
This is actually a field of sunflowers that surrounds our rural home. Simply breathtaking when if full bloom. Watch for more photos to come.

The Start Of Something Big
This image gives you a close-up view of a sunflower just beginning to bloom. At this stage, I think they have a dangerous look to them; not nearly as inviting as they are when the flower is fully opened.
This is another shot taken from the farm field across the road of our rural Wisconsin home. All the blooms are open and “sunny” by now. I’ll post more sunflower photos as the season progresses.

Gladiolus Lethargy
These gladiolus seemed to lack the energy and strength to stand up straight. To be fair, it wasn’t their fault. They were planted late, in mid summer, and didn’t begin to bloom until early fall. Even though they are far from perfect specimens, the vibrant red and uncharacteristic, nonchalant posture appeal to me.

Poppy Progression
Poppies are some of my favorites. The colors are always vibrant, the multi-layer petals are interesting and the center provides a natural focal point.
This photo shows the poppies in three stages – the pre-bloom bud, the bud just beginning to burst forth, and full, glorious bloom.

A Flower in Medusa’s Hair
This is a poppy from our home flowerbed. The poppy buds in the background remind me of snakes.
Medusa is the character in classic Greek mythology whose hair was turned into snakes.
