This very young raccoon kept me in its view as I walked around the tree he was sitting in. The was the last of the siblings that were hanging around our yard for a couple of weeks last summer. This was the only one I saw climbing and I was surprised by how well it was able to get up the tree for how small it was.
To add to the adorable nature of this photo, if you look closely, you will a little dirt on the tip of its nose. They would spend most of their time with their noses buried in the grass, hunting bugs and grubs and who knows what tiny raccoons eat.

Four-eyes Needs a Shave
For those who hate spiders – relax. This is a teeny-tiny jumping spider. I had to greatly enlarge this photo to be able to see blacks of its eyes – all four of them. To give you an idea of how small this handsome devil is, he is posing on the top of a chain link fence post.
I just happened to spot some movement as I was watching for birds while in Missouri. He was pretty active, scurrying each inch of the rounded fence post top.

Turtle Happy
This big fella seemed content to be lounging in a ravine, caked in mud, balanced on a log, basking in the sunshine of an early spring morning. This photo was taken in the woods of northeast Wisconsin.
As we began a hike along the Ahnapee State Trail another couple ending their hike told us to watch for a large turtle in the ditch. We walked quite a while and didn’t see anything. We thought we’d missed it or it had moved on. Well, as you can see, we eventually spotted it.
To get up-close and personal, I had to tromp through some muck. It didn’t seem to mind my presence and sat for quite a few shots. Eventually it slid off the log and moved to the shade and mud under the log.
I don’t know what kind of turtle (or tortoise) this is but I can tell you he was large and looked ancient. Judging by the slight smile on his face, I think he was happy to see me.

Cool Dude
A macro view of a cool dragon fly resting on the buds of a hosta plant in our flower bed. Those eyes remind me of aviator glasses. Seems like there should be a cigarette loosely dangling from his mouth.

Eyes of Wonder
That look of innocence and wide-eyed wonder is priceless. On a recent visit, I made sure to get on the floor with our granddaughter and my camera.
The camera is a proven baby attractant; an immediate point of interest for the short-lived attention span of youngsters. The challenge is to move close enough to fill the frame with your subject and still keep out of reach. I usually spend a lot of time scooting backward and snapping a lot of photos in hopes of snagging one or two good shots. This is one of my favorites.

With Dad
The eyes of this child are hypnotic. It’s hard for me to look away…all the while, wondering what she might be thinking.
This is a father and daughter – part of a family of five I was working with for a family portrait. He was carrying her as we walked to another setting in the outdoors.
