Fire From Below

Pano, Kewaunee, Lighthouse, SunriseThis spectacular August sunrise colored the sky behind the Kewaunee lighthouse and pier.  Kewaunee, Wisconsin is a small town, located on the western shore of Lake Michigan.

This is a panoramic shot of about three separate photos joined (stitched) together to create a wide-view image. This photo was taken on August 31, 2019.  I just discovered it in my archives.  I did post another image taken this same morning I titled, “Awaking the Calm.” (Click the title to see that one.)

This is not the greatest image because it was taken when it was still pretty dark – much darker than what this photos represents. I had to remove a lot of digital “noise” and pull back the saturation. You can see a larger version of it by clicking on the image.  If you look closely at the larger image you will see boats in the water (to the right of the lighthouse) and fishermen on the pier.

Chill In the Air

Algoma, Lighthouse, Winter, Sunrise

I recently upgraded my computer and while transferring files, I discovered a number of images worthy of revisiting.  (Actually, there’s a lot I’ve just not gotten around to processing.)

My typical photo outing is to go take a number of photos, download them to the computer, find my favorite, process it and post it.  That leaves a lot of photos taken on the same day untouched.  Many of them are worthy of posting, but I rarely get to it.  This is one of those images dating back to February 17, 2013.  Back then I selected and posted “Frigid Sunrise Fog” as my favorite shot.

Angel in the Works

Fireworks, Reflection, Angel, Kewaunee

Here’s a happy photography accident.  To me, it looks like an angel in white showed up to take part in the festivities during the fireworks display above the harbor at Kewaunee, Wisconsin.  This image was captured during their July 3rd celebration of Independence Day 2023.

This is not any kind of photo magic. This is the way the separate rocket bursts were recorded. Love the colors.

Big Harry Fireworks Display

Fireworks, Harbor, Kewaunee, Tug Boat

This is an unusual fireworks capture from the Fireworks display on July 3rd in Kewaunee, WI.  This is one of my favorite perspectives of the Kewaunee show – from the west end of the harbor.

There’s a lot I like about this image.  The fireworks burst is has an unusual color and flow.  I love the reflections on the harbor. If you look closely, you will see a few tiny white dots. They are stars in the night sky. And, of course, the Tug Ludington all lit up in the foreground. Also note the bluish dot above the water near the middle of the photo. That is the light from the Kewaunee lighthouse.

Kewaunee Sparkles

Kewaunee, Fireworks, Night, Tug

Fireworks light up the night sky over the Kewaunee, WI harbor.  The Tug Ludington, a tourist attraction and permanent resident of the harbor, was a quiet observer.

One of my photographic joys is capturing fireworks. Kewaunee is a couple of miles from my home, so I try to make their annual display.  I’ve photographed their fireworks from a number of locations over the years but this spot, at the edge of the harbor is one of my favorites.  I love the reflection from the calm water. The tug adds a nice point of interest.

Emotional Distancing

Lighthouse, Monochrome, Emotional

In times of darkness and difficulty, it is only natural that we look to The Light.

This is a very emotionally moving image for me. Without getting too sappy; this image speaks what my heart has been feeling amidst the recent chaos, confusion, and wholesale upheaval of our world.

In these times, I’m not looking to some activist group or the government or some celebrity or even well-intentioned family and friends for clear guidance and direction. I look to the Light of the World, Christ Jesus and His Word to bring understanding, direction and peace to my life.

I got up early to capture the sunrise at Algoma, WI.  However, the sun and sky didn’t provide what I was hoping for. Still, I kept shooting.  After all, I’d made the effort to get there, maybe something of interest would emerge.  I thought it was pretty much a “learning experience” until I viewed this frame on the computer. The color was pretty bland, so I decided to convert it to monochrome and…  Well, I think I found a diamond in the rough.  It’s not a great “photographic effort” technically, but it moves me.  (That’s why we call it, “Art.”)

I think this image is much more powerful when viewed larger. You can see a full-screen image by clicking on the photo.

A Little Light Reflection

Sunrise, Lighthouse, Lake Michigan, KewauneeThe waves were calm but the sky seemed to portray a warning. This red sky appeared, in the pre-sunrise morning, over Lake Michigan; behind the Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse and pier.

Scenes like this often reminded me of the old adage, “Red sky at night, sailors delight. Red sky at morning, sailors warning.”

This thinking was cited by Jesus in Matthew 16:2-3, “…When it is evening you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red’;  and in the morning, ‘It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening…”  Shakespeare wrote something similar in, Venus and Adonis. “Like a red morn that ever yet betokened, Wreck to the seaman, tempest to the field, Sorrow to the shepherds, woe unto the birds, Gusts and foul flaws to herdmen and to herds.”

According the Library of Congress website, there is some validity to this saying (within limits).  They write…

When we see a red sky at night, this means that the setting sun is sending its light through a high concentration of dust particles. This usually indicates high pressure and stable air coming in from the west. Basically good weather will follow.

A red sunrise can mean that a high pressure system (good weather) has already passed, thus indicating that a storm system (low pressure) may be moving to the east. A morning sky that is a deep, fiery red can indicate that there is high water content in the atmosphere. So, rain could be on its way.

Flattering Imitation

Sunrise, Algoma, Lighthouse, Water, Reflection, Lake Michigan
The harbor seemed to be trying to imitate the deep red color of the pre-sunrise clouds behind the Algoma, Wisconsin lighthouse.  Algoma is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan.

I was impressed with the vivid colors in the water’s reflection. The red reminded me of blood in the water.  I almost named is something like that, but thought it was too grim for such a pretty scene.

I took this photo off the south pier, lying on my stomach, trying to get the camera as close to the surface of the water as possible. At those moments, you can be sure I have a death grip on the camera. It would not be a fun day if the camera slipped out of my hands and under the water.

First and Last Lights

Sunrise, Lighthouse, Algoma, Lake Michigan, Wisconsin,
As the sun breaches the horizon, bringing its first light of morning, the Algoma, Wisconsin lighthouse is bringing its last light of the night.

I’ve not had much time lately to get a lot of photography done so I began to visit the archives to see what gold I might be able to find.  This is a shot from May of 2013.  I was actually thinking of making it a monochrome image, but decided I couldn’t pass up the warm tones of that background.

When The Morning Comes

Algoma, Lighthouse, Sunrise, Silhouette, Lake Michigan
As it rises, the sun illuminates and colorfully accentuates the clouds and contrails behind the Algoma, Wisconsin lighthouse and pier. Algoma is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan.

This was taken a couple of years ago. This is actually a panorama image – where I joined three separate image together to get a wider, more detailed view.

These are the mornings that make getting up before sunrise and driving to your destination worth the effort.
