Algoma Morning Scene
Man, I love mornings like this!
This is the lighthouse at Algoma, WI accentuated by the early light of the rising sun filtered through the clouds above a calm Lake Michigan.

Dramatic Calm
Lots of gold-tone goodness in this one. The sun has just come up over a calm Lake Michigan, but is being obscured and filtered by clouds. This, of course, is the lighthouse that stands ever vigilant at the mouth of the Algoma, Wisconsin harbor.
The soft tone of the sky relaxes you, but the clouds add a bit of dramatic tension at the same time.

Tidal Moon
A late-summer full moon rises over Lake Michigan, just behind the pier and lighthouse at the mouth of the Algoma, Wisconsin harbor.
I captured this image on September 30, 2012. I remember it was a late Sunday afternoon when the Green Bay Packers were playing the New Orleans Saints. It was a close game and I debated whether to miss it and hope for a good photo or just stay home and finish watching the game. I listened to it on the radio as I drove to Algoma, but I missed the end of the game because I was out near the beach taking photos.
When I got back to my van, I heard the Packers won 28 to 27. I hated to miss the game, but I’m glad I did. Full moon photos like this don’t come along every day.

Across the Harbor
A beautiful, calm morning in the harbor of Algoma, Wisconsin. Beyond the harbor, the sun is rising over Lake Michigan.
Those who follow my work know this lighthouse is one of my favorite subjects. This image was taken a few weeks ago. I’ve not had much success at catching a break when it comes to weather lately. I was there yesterday around sunrise and, again, the sky was dreary and gray.

Warming Up
The lighthouse and pier at Kewaunee, Wisconsin awaits the warming power of the sun as it begins its rise over Lake Michigan.
This photo was taken at the end of November, so it was a pretty cool morning and, as you can see by the rough seas on the right side of the pier, it was quite windy as well.

Star Power – Sunrise
The sun was powering through the clouds as it rose above Lake Michigan beyond the Algoma, Wisconsin lighthouse and harbor. This image was taken in late October.

Backlighting II
A full moon rises above Lake Michigan behind the lighthouse at the mouth of the Algoma, Wisconsin harbor.
I consider this a companion image to a sunrise I captured in a similar pose – both taken within a week of each other. The original “Backlighting” is on the right. Click it to view the full size post.
Getting the moon (or sun) in just the right position is a challenge in itself. You don’t realize how much movement there is in a rising or setting sun. The moment you get into position, the subject has moved off their mark. On both of these shots, I would be constantly moving to my left and down the bank along the beach, trying to line up the shot.

Backlighting
I’ve taken a lot of photos of the Algoma lighthouse over the years, but never one from this angle. With the tree to the left and the grass in front, it looks like an altogether different place.
The Algoma, Wisconsin harbor is before the lighthouse, the sun rising above Lake Michigan is behind the lighthouse and the tree on the left is one that lines the parking lot of the youth club.
The telephoto lens I used makes them all seem much closer to each other.

Fireworks Abound
Algoma, Wisconsin celebrated their 26th Annual Shanty Days Festival last weekend. Every year, the festival concludes with a fireworks display over the Algoma harbor.
I was on the beach with my camera and this is one of my favorite shots from the evening. It’s the blue effect coming up from the pier that makes this my favorite.
As I thought about it, I’m not sure if they planned this. I think it’s possible the blue burst was a rocket that never left the launch pad. Of course, I could be entirely wrong. Whether it was intended or accidental, it turned out pretty cool.

Fireworks of Green and Red
More fireworks from 2012 edition of Kewaunee Wisconsin’s Trout Festival. The fireworks show lit up the sky above the harbor creating beautiful reflections on the water’s surface.
