Fuzzy Stump
This tree stump has hair! What looks like redish hair sprouting from this decaying stump is moss sporangia. The forest is full of these tiny life forms this time of year.
I’m always intrigued by these tiny plant structures, often found while walking through the woods. On a recent hike, hunting mushrooms, I spotted this collection growing from the moss on a stump. A small stream of sunlight was filtering through the trees to illuminate the spot. I also like the cocklebur stuck in the moss near the top of the stump.

Woodland Floor Decor
This was a delightful find on an autumn walk through the woods in northeast Wisconsin. The tallest of these tiny red mushrooms was about 2 inches.
We stumbled upon these while trekking to some waterfall site in Marinette County, Wisconsin. We found a number of colorful mushrooms on that trip.

Red Vine
On a hike though Wisconsin woodlands, the deep red color of the leaves on this vine, draped across a moss covered rock, caught my eye.
This was on a trip to photograph waterfalls in Marinette County. On a very difficult, rocky trail to a viewing spot, I noticed the contrasting color. Even though I was there for the waterfall, I couldn’t resist a quick capture.

Tree Hugger
I love macro photography because it brings things that are small, and often missed, closeup and in sharp focus. It reveals the detail that we rarely have the opportunity to observe and enjoy.
This small butterfly was one of several I found mingling around the base of a tree in the woods of Missouri. It seemed like a gathering of old friends. Unfortunately, I was’t able to get a good shot of the group’s activity because, at the base of the tree, there was a good deal of tall grass that shielded my view. This momentary loner was kind enough to sit still long enough for me to snap its image. An online friend helped me identify this as a Hackberry Emperor butterfly.
By the way, the image you see here was flipped 180-degrees. When I snapped it, the butterfly was facing downward. I thought it seemed more natural and a little easier on the eyes to have it positioned upward.

Moss & Flames
On a hike through the woods, my eyes were drawn to this scene. Sunlight streaming through the trees illuminated a patch of moss growing on a decaying log.
What caught my eye was the little, bright red, hair-like plants growing from the green moss bed. The way the light hit it, it reminded me of little flames.
