This group of honey bees were busy gathering the small amount of honey that remained in some old honeycomb.
This is a “composite” image. To create this image I focused my camera on an area where the bees were working and locked down the position on my tripod. Then, I snapped a number of photos when bees were in the frame. Then I combined several of the images – with bees in various positions – in Photoshop. All of the bees you see in the image were exactly where you see them…but not all at the same moment in time.
I had it in my mind to create this image since the day I snapped the photos last June. I finally got around to taking the time to combine the bunch. There were four separate shots used to make the image you see here.

Singing for Supper
These young tree swallows are hungry and waiting for mom to serve up lunch. They are only about a week old, but growing fast. There are six in this nest box; one of several around our property.
Normally, when you open the nest box to look in our their progress, these young birds are very calm and sleep-like. I trick them to stretch and open their mouths my faking them out with a little whistle. When the mom returns with food, her motherly chirp will perk them up and they open up for the meal she’s brought. So, all it takes it is a little chirp of a whistle and they all bob up, mouths open, waiting. Don’t worry, they don’t stay hungry and wanting for long. Within in moments after close up the house, the parents are flying back in and out with food for them.

Nester
I took this appropriate photo on Mother’s Day. I was taking photos at the Algoma, WI harbor and stumbled upon this Canada Goose sitting on her nest. She was a little nervous and was guarded while I was around, but I kept my distance.

Whiskers
This American Robin was working frantically to fill her beak with grass. I thought it made a comical site. Obviously, somewhere there was a nest to be built.
According to Wikipedia, the American Robin “…is one of the earliest bird species to lay eggs, beginning to breed shortly after returning to its summer range from its winter range. Its nest consists of long coarse grass, twigs, paper, and feathers, and is smeared with mud and often cushioned with grass or other soft materials.”
Though one of the earliset to build its nests, this robin was gathering nesting material at the end of June. Maybe it was starting its second effort of the season.

Peeping Fresh
I looked to see how the birds nesting in the bird houses at our place were doing…and there were new babes. These are freshly hatched tree swallows – a few hours old, at most. You can see at least three that have hatched. The mother started with six eggs and is, no doubt, sitting on the still-to-be-hatched stragglers. In a few hours the hatch should be complete. Then the real work begins.
I also took pictures of the blue birds that are about a week old. Watch for photos of them soon.

Bluebird Hatch
Just hours old, these bluebirds are waiting for their siblings to hatch. All of them successfully hatched and fledged.
I shot this by lifting the top off the bluebird house and shooting straight down with my Kodak Easyshare DX7590. This photo was taken in early June of 2010.
