A Beautiful Capture

Lakota Lake, Lake, Reflection, Panorama

This is a panoramic view of Lakota Lake. This is a small lake in Custer State Park in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

We stumbled upon this calm, out-of-the-way lake while driving though the park.  This was one of my wife’s favorite spots at Custer State Park. She is the one on the shore taking photos of the beauty that she sent to her parents. This is a very wide image – a compilation of  five individual photos taken.

According to the US Forest Service, “Lakota Lake is located southeast of Keystone, SD, on US Highway 16A (Iron Mountain Road), within the Norbeck Wildlife Preserve. It is a small, non-motorized lake and a popular destination for fishing and kayaking. A hitchrail is provided for horses, along with access to Iron Creek Trail #15. Several picnic tables offer a scenic view of the lake. Lakota Lake Road was upgraded in fall 2021.”

You can get a little better, larger view by clicking on the photo.

Badlands Spectrum of Colors

Badlands, Panorama, Landscape

This is one of my favorite views of Badlands National Park. This is a panorama of the Yellow Mounds section of the park.

I love the variety of the landscape – from the stripped, rugged rock formations in the background to the yellowish hued mounds accented with red shoulders, to the green valley with a creek bed coursing through it.

If you look closely, on the hill to the far left, you can see cars of park visitor on the road. To see that and other details in this image, click on the photo for a much larger view.

Yellow Mounds of the Badlands

Yellow Mounds, Badlands, South Dakota

This is a panoramic view of South Dakota’s Badlands National Park.  This was taken in the Yellow Mounds area of the park. This is another one of those “otherworldly” places.

This is a very large image and the normal size screen can’t begin to do it justice.  Still, you can get a much larger, full-screen view by clicking on the image.  When you do a much larger version will open in a new browser tab.  Enjoy!

Fire From Below

Pano, Kewaunee, Lighthouse, SunriseThis spectacular August sunrise colored the sky behind the Kewaunee lighthouse and pier.  Kewaunee, Wisconsin is a small town, located on the western shore of Lake Michigan.

This is a panoramic shot of about three separate photos joined (stitched) together to create a wide-view image. This photo was taken on August 31, 2019.  I just discovered it in my archives.  I did post another image taken this same morning I titled, “Awaking the Calm.” (Click the title to see that one.)

This is not the greatest image because it was taken when it was still pretty dark – much darker than what this photos represents. I had to remove a lot of digital “noise” and pull back the saturation. You can see a larger version of it by clicking on the image.  If you look closely at the larger image you will see boats in the water (to the right of the lighthouse) and fishermen on the pier.

Big Badlands Overlook

Pano, Badlands, This was our first view of the amazing scenery at Badlands National Park in South Dakota. This observation point is known as the Big Badlands Overlook.  This was our first visit to the Badlands and it was stunning, to say the least.

This is a very large image, created by stitching 6 individual photos together.  It is so large that it is hard to take it all in.  To get a sense of the grandeur, you need to view the largest version your screen will allow.  Simply click on the photo and a large version will open in a new browser tab.  Take your time and browse the image.

The Grand Overview

Mount Jefferson, Pano, View

I was able to capture this spectacular view by being in the right place at the right time. This a view of the Cascade mountain range as the sun was setting (out of view, to the right), looking south from the Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood in Oregon.  The prominent peak in the middle is Mount Jefferson in Linn County. I was able to do a little hiking and sightseeing while in the Portland area for a conference in early October.

This is a massive file because it is about 9 individual photos all joined together to be able to capture the full panorama. It is hard to get the full benefit of this scene without viewing it on a large scale.  You can see a full-screen version of this image (at least as large as your screen will allow) by clicking on the photo.  When you do, a larger version will open in a new browser tab.

A Blessing

Rainbow, Farm House, Rural, PanoA rainbow arches over our rural, northeast Wisconsin home.

I happened to notice this rainbow at the very end of the day…just as the sun was setting. In truth, I was a little late to the party. A few minutes earlier and it would have been a full, arching beauty.

This is a panoramic image that required four images (stitched together) to capture the full view you see here.

You can view a larger, more detailed version of this image by clicking on the photo. When you do, a full-screen version will open in a new browser tab.

Two-Thirds Blue Hue

Pano, Sunrise, Kewaunee, Clouds, Blue

The sky was filled with clouds of blue for this Lake Michigan sunrise. You can see the Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse and pier on the horizon.

This is a panoramic view – where I combined four separate images into one big (and in this case, long) image.  I took this approach to gather in more of the sky, which I thought was the most interesting aspect of this moment.

If you look very closely, you can see a charter fishing boat heading out for the morning behind the pier, just to the left of the lighthouse. Click on the image to get a larger, better view.

Warm Emotions On A Cold Morning

Pano, Panorama, Panoramic, Ice, Cold, Winter, Kewaunee Harbor
On a cold morning, the promise of warmth is conveyed by the subtle hues of a developing sunrise over the frozen harbor of Kewaunee, Wisconsin. Kewaunee is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan.

This is a very large panoramic image. To enjoy the full effect, please click on the photo. When you do a full-screen image will open in a new browser tab. On a small screen you will want to zoom in to see more of the details.

A look at the full- screen, panoramic image will reveal the Kewaunee lighthouse (a small bump, off center,  just to the right of the trees on the left) and a historic WWII tug boat, the Ludington decorated with Christmas lights (to the left of the trees on the right). Unfortunately, even in the largest view I offer here, the Christmas lights are not really bright enough to see them. You have to view the very large, original file on my computer with a large monitor to make them out.

This is one of my favorite images of 2018. It is also the last image I shot of the year. It was a cold, December, Sunday morning. Sunrise was early enough I was able to catch it before getting ready to head to church. I decided to shoot the sunrise in Kewaunee from a different perspective – from the harbor facing southeast.

You can see the cracked ice in the foreground. It wasn’t frozen solid. The large sections were floating and gently, and almost imperceptibly, moving ever so slightly in waves. You could hear the slight creaking/cracking of the ice movement more than you could see it. I was at this spot for nearly an hour and ended up painfully cold by the time I decided to pack it in.

To create this wide-view, I had to combine (stitch) six separate images.

Transcendent Flourish

Kewaunee, Sunrise, Lake Michigan, Lighthouse
Clouds were the scene makers, along with the rising sun, behind the Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse and pier. Kewaunee is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan.

This is a panoramic image, created by combining several smaller, individual shots into one large image. This makes it a huge file. It was necessary to fit all of this beautiful sky in the shot.

You can view a much larger and wider version of this image by clicking on the photo.  When you do, it will open a new browser tab with full-screen version of this image.
