Hanging Hearts

Bleeding Hearts, Flowers, Stem, Dew, Drops, Pink, Garden
It’s not difficult to understand the thinking behind the common name of this garden favorite – bleeding heart. Its heart-shape pink or white blooms with a protruding tip make it a logical choice.

Bleeding hearts are a species of flowering plant in the poppy family. These bleeding hearts are from ,my wife’s flowerbed near our house.

Segregated Spring

Tulips, Tulip Festival, Pella, IA, Yellow, Red, Purple, White
The tulips were brilliant at the Scholte House gardens.  We visited there during the 2015 Tulip Festival in Pella, IA.

Star Power

Flower, Spring, Garden, Beautiful, The camera (or, more accurately, the photographer) did not fully capture the beauty of this flower.  It seemed much more appealing to my eye than it does here, in digital form.

This is a new addition to one of  my wife’s flower beds.  Unfortunately, it got bit by the recent, late frost.  It looks like it may recover so, hopefully, we’ll be seeing future blooms from this one.

Kewaunee Morning Hues

Kewaunee, WI, Sunrise, Lighthouse, Lake Michigan, Colorful
It’s hard to rival the beautiful colors of a Kewaunee, Wisconsin sunrise. This is an image I captured just before sunrise yesterday morning.

Kewaunee is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan.

Subtle Awakening

Sunrise, Seascape, Lake Michigan, Kewaunee, WI, Lighthouse, BeachThe Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse and pier stand ready to greet the sun as it rises above the Lake Michigan horizon.

I love the way the light dances on the beach with the gentle rhythm of the calm, early morning waves.  The clouds above add another layer of flavorful light.

Autumn Leaf Salad

Fall, Autumn, Leaves, Leaf, Fall Foliage, Autumn Foliage
The beauty of last autumn seems like a distant memory.  Thankfully, we still have a record of the colorful leaves.  This view, from the forest floor, offers a variety of color, shape and texture.  This photo was taken on October 18, 2014.

Gladiolus Lethargy

Gladiolus, Flowers, Red, Blooming
These gladiolus seemed to lack the energy and strength to stand up straight. To be fair, it wasn’t their fault. They were planted late, in mid summer, and didn’t begin to bloom until early fall. Even though they are far from perfect specimens, the vibrant red and uncharacteristic, nonchalant posture appeal to me.

Fall Floral Outburst

Flowers, Wildflowers, Floral, White
These festive wildflowers were growing on a bush at the edge of our property.  I don’t know what kind of flowers (or weed) they are, but they were some of the last blooms of the fall.

Ending On A High Note

Leaves, Red, Fall, Fall Foliage, Autumn, Fall Colors
When this photo was made, most of the leaves in the forest had fallen. These red leaves were some of the last hold outs. Even though their days were numbered, they were making the most of their time…going out in dramatic fashion…in a blaze of red.

On its way down, this red maple leaf got a helping hand from a sturdy branch. Photographed in the woodlands of northeast Wisconsin.
