January Fog

Foggy, Fog, Field, Farm, Rural, Tree

Whatever lies beyond that tree has been swallowed up by a eerie mid-winter’s fog.

This is was snapped in the middle of the day, in the farm field across the road from our rural home in Kewaunee County, WI.  I’ve taken quite a few photos of this tree over the years.  See… Spring Enchantment, Day’s End Elm and Serene Sunset.

Keep Out

Woods, Rural, Driveway, Gate, Keep Out, Posted, Monochrome, Fog, Foggy

On a cold, dreary, foggy day, this rural driveway into the woods seems mysterious and even a bit dangerous.

This is a spot just down the road and around the corner from my home.  I drive by it quite often.  It never caught my eye until I drove by it slowly on a foggy day.

Morning Reverence

Sunrise, Beach, Winter, Kneeling

But to You I have cried out, O LORD, and in the morning my prayer comes before You. ~ Psalm 88:13

The sun was rising over Lake Michigan on a Saturday morning in February, 2012. I was at the beach at Kewaunee, WI. The sunrise wasn’t quite what I was hoping for so I thought I would experiment with some different different camera settings.  I also decided to move into the field of view for a couple of shots.

This is similar to another shot taken the same morning where I was standing, facing the sun.  I posted it a couple of weeks ago – Future So Bright.

Future So Bright

Sunrise, Winter, Beach, Lake MichiganI don’t often take photos of myself…but I made an exception this time.  Of course, my choices were limited since I was the only one around at the time.

It was a morning last February and I was on the beach at Kewaunee, WI hoping to catch a nice sunrise.  I took several photos and then, for something different, I decided to step into the shot. A tripod and wireless remote for my camera makes this possible.  It’s still not easy to get the placement right when you’re not behind the camera.

Path to Splendor

My favorite quote about photography…

“Light makes photography. Embrace light. Admire it. Love it. But above all, know light. Know it for all you are worth, and you will know the key to photography.”   George Eastman

This was a photo where the star of the show is light.  It’s a winter sunrise taken at the sparkling, snow-covered beach in Kewaunee, WI.

Winter on the Shores of Algoma, WI

Algoma, Winter, Beach, Sunrise
Winter – as presented by Algoma, WI on the morning of Sunday, February 27, 2001.  As I often do, I stopped for a moment to snap a few pictures on my way to church that morning.

Algoma sits on the western shore of Lake Michigan. Beneath the snow, next to the lamppost, is a boardwalk that runs along Algoma’s Crescent Beach. In the distance you see Algoma’s harbor and famous Pier Light.

I can’t decide if I prefer this image in color or B&W (slight sepia tone) so I offer you both. Give each your consideration and and let me know which one your prefer in the comments below.

If you click on either of the images you’ll get a larger version where you can easily flip back and forth between the two.

Lady in White

Cemetery, Beaver Dam, SnowHere’s another view from a slightly different angle of “The Lady in White.”  As in the previous post, this scene was captured on a snowy day in the cemetery at Beaver Dam, WI.  The gentle snowfall made this more beautiful and serene than the photo conveys.  I’m going to have to practice more on photographing falling snow.

Snow Covered Cemetery

Cemetery, Beaver Dam, Snow
The serenity of this cemetery scene was enhanced by the gently falling snow.  All the white dots you see are snowflakes.  The camera didn’t capture them well.

Tombstone, Snow, Beaver Dam Cemetery

These photos were taken Saturday, February 26, 2011.  While driving through snow, returning from a trip to visit our son in Madison, WI, we made a pit stop in Beaver Dam.  There was cemetery just off the interstate. With the gently falling snow, it seemed like an opportune time and place for some interesting images.

I tweaked the tones and contrast a bit, but nothing I could do brought out the true beauty of the above scene. Guess you had to be there.

While driving along the winding snow covered paths of the cemetery, Sara noticed the “Snow” stone.  It seemed so fitting, I had to take a photo.  I figure, if we could find another one that says “cold,” we might be able to put winter behind us.

Winter Lighthouse – Algoma, WI

Algoma, Winter, Cold, Ice, Sunrise
This is pier light at the entrance of the Algoma, WI harbor.  This is a photo taken in March of 2007 using my old camera.  That camera did some pretty good work.
