Embrace of the Sun
One of the things I like to do is catch the sun peeking from behind the Algoma, WI lighthouse. I took this image last Sunday morning on my way to church. The sun is rising pretty early in these parts right now. This photo was snapped around 5:55 am.
More clouds in the sky would have made this a more interesting image for me. The one thing I do like – and the reason I think it’s worthy of sharing – is the way the sun seems to reach around the lighthouse. The rays remind me of arms reaching around to gently, warmly caress the lighthouse. A good morning hug!
I’ve isolated and enlarged the lighthouse to give you a better view of the sun’s embrace. (Right)

The sun was rising over Lake Michigan on a Saturday morning in February, 2012. I was at the beach at Kewaunee, WI. The sunrise wasn’t quite what I was hoping for so I thought I would experiment with some different different camera settings. I also decided to move into the field of view for a couple of shots.
This is similar to another shot taken the same morning where I was standing, facing the sun. I posted it a couple of weeks ago – Future So Bright.

Future So Bright
I don’t often take photos of myself…but I made an exception this time. Of course, my choices were limited since I was the only one around at the time.
It was a morning last February and I was on the beach at Kewaunee, WI hoping to catch a nice sunrise. I took several photos and then, for something different, I decided to step into the shot. A tripod and wireless remote for my camera makes this possible. It’s still not easy to get the placement right when you’re not behind the camera.

Bluebird Dawn
Just before sunrise I noticed a bluebird checking out the bluebird houses in our yard. I grabbed the camera and headed out the back door. I got a picture but not the one I was after. Here’s the story…
My goal was to snap a picture of the bluebird posed on the bluebird house, framed by a big, bright sun behind him. While I was trying to line up the shot, the bluebird flew off the house, into a nearby tree. I was able to click off a quick photo of the bird in the tree before he flew off for good. Then I turned my camera to the sunrise and snapped a couple of frames.
The image above is a combination of two different photos (shown on the right). I started with a shot of the sunrise and overlaid the silhouette of the tree branches with the bluebird. As you can see, the original photo of the bird and branches had a background of just light gray sky. Not very interesting or appealing. The sunrise was pretty on it’s own, but the branches and bird adds interest .
Both photos were taken within a minute of each other. Not quite the image I was shooting for, but I think the final result turned out well.

Skylights
The lighthouse at Kewaunee, WI is one of my favorite subjects. This was taken early in the morning, shortly after sunrise. If you look closely, you’ll notice a little bump at the end of the pier. That’s a lone fisherman. I took this photo kneeling at the very edge of the beach while Lake Michigan gently lapped the shore.

This was a photo where the star of the show is light. It’s a winter sunrise taken at the sparkling, snow-covered beach in Kewaunee, WI.

Band of Gold
The only visible evidence of Saturday’s sunrise behind the Kewaunee, WI lighthouse was a horizontal strip of color. This image was taken from shore. The “rocks” in the foreground are really chunks of ice and dirt.

In the Still of the Light
A Sunday morning sunrise over Lake Michigan and the tiny harbor of Algoma, WI. I snapped this last Sunday on my way to church. It was one of the coldest mornings of this year’s unusually mild winter.
I normally like to see more clouds in the sky in my sunrise/sunset images, but I thought the light, wispy clouds just behind the lighthouse were a nice change.

Genesis Dawn
This was how the last day of January, 2012 began at my house. It turned out to be a beautiful day with unseasonably warm temperatures.
I was in my home office, getting some things together before leaving for work, when my wife said, “Have you seen the sky?” One quick look had me dashing for my camera; hoping to get a couple of good shots in the few minutes I had.
This is a view of the pre-sunrise sky beyond the farm field that borders my home.
