Lake Awakening

Sunrise, Lighthouse, Lake Michigan

A serene sunrise casts a warm glow over the water, with the sun hovering slightly above the horizon. The Kewaunee, WI lighthouse is silhouetted against the bright sky at the end of the long pier.

This is an image I resurrected from my archives. This scene was captured June 6, 2015.  It’s the sky that makes this an appealing image for me.  This was taken from the beach.

Moment of Reflection

Wasp, Yellow Jacket, Water, Reflection

These common wasps seemed to be admiring themselves in the water’s reflection.  Actually, they were getting a drink at the birdbath in our yard.

I happened to notice a few wasps at the birdbath one day and keep watching.  I found a steady stream of wasps visiting the birdbath all day long.  Shortly after, I discovered a steady stream of wasps flying up into a corner of our house. They obviously they had built a nest there.

I also found a couple of wasp nests in the ground of our yard. It must have been a good year for wasps in our area. On a good note, they were never bothersome to us; a little worrisome when one found its way into the house, but no stings. (Ironically, my wife was stung by one while hiking during our vacation in South Dakota.)

Spearfish Falls

Waterfall, Waterfalls, Spearfish Falls

This is a vertical panorama of Spearfish Falls; a popular attraction of Spearfish Canyon in the Black Hills area of South Dakota.  Spearfish Canyon was one of my favorite areas.  Highway US-14A  winds through an incredibly beautiful, deep and narrow gorge with a small but active river running alongside the road. This is also where we saw mountain goats along the roadway and on the hills.

This is a panoramic image (3 individual photos joined together) because the observation spot is so close to the falls, I couldn’t fit the whole thing in the frame using the lens I had with me.  We were close enough to feel the mist/spray from the falls.

This photo was taken on a cool, dreary day and, in fact, it started to rain on us; which hastened our departure.  To get to the falls there is a nice half-mile trail.  This photo was taken in mid-September so the flow is considerably less than you would experience in the spring.

Gooseberry Falls

Gooseberry Falls, Waterfall, Water

Along the northern shore of Lake Superior you will find Gooseberry Falls State Park of Minnesota.  This is the park’s namesake – Gooseberry falls.

This is one of the photos I found in my archives. This image was captured July 7, 2017.  It was taken on a trip to the Duluth, MN area.  It was a trip that ended in tragedy; where I broke my Sony A77V camera!  Nobody was hurt, but it was a traumatic event for me. I got over it by purchasing the same model (used) for about half the price of new. And, as they say, the rest was photographic history.

This is a small panoramic image; where I combined two separate photos to provide a wider view. You can get a larger, more detailed view of these waterfalls by clicking on the photo.

A Beautiful Capture

Lakota Lake, Lake, Reflection, Panorama

This is a panoramic view of Lakota Lake. This is a small lake in Custer State Park in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

We stumbled upon this calm, out-of-the-way lake while driving though the park.  This was one of my wife’s favorite spots at Custer State Park. She is the one on the shore taking photos of the beauty that she sent to her parents. This is a very wide image – a compilation of  five individual photos taken.

According to the US Forest Service, “Lakota Lake is located southeast of Keystone, SD, on US Highway 16A (Iron Mountain Road), within the Norbeck Wildlife Preserve. It is a small, non-motorized lake and a popular destination for fishing and kayaking. A hitchrail is provided for horses, along with access to Iron Creek Trail #15. Several picnic tables offer a scenic view of the lake. Lakota Lake Road was upgraded in fall 2021.”

Should Be A Postcard

Algoma, Lighthouse, Lake Michigan, Sunrise

The lighthouse at Algoma, Wisconsin stands in bold silhouette before a summer Lake Michigan sunrise.  A glorious morning to photograph one of my favorite subjects.

This photo was taken in September of 2015 and has managed to go unnoticed on my hard drive…until today.

You can view a larger, more detailed version of this image by clicking on the photo. When you do, the boat on the right side of the horizon will be easier to see.

Bridal Veil Falls in Spearfish Canyon

Bridal Veil Falls, South Dakota, Spearfish Canyon, Waterfall

This is a late summer view of Bridal Veil Falls in the Spearfish Canyon of South Dakota. It was a pretty minimal flow, compared to how much water flows at other times of the year.

Cascading approximately 60 feet, Bridal Veil Falls is the most accessible waterfall in the canyon. The Falls flows intensely in the spring and slows considerably in late summer and fall. Bridal Veil Fall is located approximately 5.8 miles south of Spearfish Canyon’s north entrance.

Morning Lake Mist

Legion Lake, South Dakota, Mist, Lake, Reflection

This is an early morning view of Stockade Lake in West Custer Township of South Dakota. Stockade Lake is the largest of Custer State Park’s five lakes. This image was captured just before the sun rose over the trees.

Horsetail Falls

Horsetail Falls, Waterfall, Oregon

Horsetail Falls is a waterfall located on Horsetail Creek along the Columbia River Gorge in Multnomah County, in the U.S. state of Oregon. The falls drop over a cut over the columnar basalt cliff within the Oneonta Gorge.  It is one of the waterfalls along the Columbia River Highway’s waterfall corridor. (From Wikipedia.)

In October of 2023 I attended a church leadership conference in Portland. When time afforded, we took in some of the local sites and landscape.  This was the first Oregon waterfall of many I photographed on that trip.  I will, no doubt, post more when time and inclination align.

Fire From Below

Pano, Kewaunee, Lighthouse, SunriseThis spectacular August sunrise colored the sky behind the Kewaunee lighthouse and pier.  Kewaunee, Wisconsin is a small town, located on the western shore of Lake Michigan.

This is a panoramic shot of about three separate photos joined (stitched) together to create a wide-view image. This photo was taken on August 31, 2019.  I just discovered it in my archives.  I did post another image taken this same morning I titled, “Awaking the Calm.” (Click the title to see that one.)

This is not the greatest image because it was taken when it was still pretty dark – much darker than what this photos represents. I had to remove a lot of digital “noise” and pull back the saturation. You can see a larger version of it by clicking on the image.  If you look closely at the larger image you will see boats in the water (to the right of the lighthouse) and fishermen on the pier.
