Big Harry Fireworks Display

Fireworks, Harbor, Kewaunee, Tug Boat

This is an unusual fireworks capture from the Fireworks display on July 3rd in Kewaunee, WI.  This is one of my favorite perspectives of the Kewaunee show – from the west end of the harbor.

There’s a lot I like about this image.  The fireworks burst is has an unusual color and flow.  I love the reflections on the harbor. If you look closely, you will see a few tiny white dots. They are stars in the night sky. And, of course, the Tug Ludington all lit up in the foreground. Also note the bluish dot above the water near the middle of the photo. That is the light from the Kewaunee lighthouse.

Kewaunee Sparkles

Kewaunee, Fireworks, Night, Tug

Fireworks light up the night sky over the Kewaunee, WI harbor.  The Tug Ludington, a tourist attraction and permanent resident of the harbor, was a quiet observer.

One of my photographic joys is capturing fireworks. Kewaunee is a couple of miles from my home, so I try to make their annual display.  I’ve photographed their fireworks from a number of locations over the years but this spot, at the edge of the harbor is one of my favorites.  I love the reflection from the calm water. The tug adds a nice point of interest.

Colorful Kewaunee Fourth

Fireworks, Beach, Kewaunee, 4th of July, Spectators
A crowd of wide-eyed spectators watch the Fourth of July fireworks show from Selner Beach in Kewaunee, Wisconsin.  Along with the booming colors the crowd was serenaded by the gentle, rhythmic sound of Lake Michigan waves on the shore.

I enjoy photographing fireworks. I particularly enjoy capturing the fine detail.  Unfortunately, you have to really zoom in to see the kind of detail I’m talking about. Fortunately, with the large megapixels of today’s cameras, you can see some amazing detail when you enlarge the image.  You won’t be able to see that kind of detail in this image, but you can view a larger version to get a better, overall view by clicking on the photo. When you do, a full-screen version will open in a new browser tab.

More fireworks from 2012 edition of Kewaunee Wisconsin’s Trout Festival. The fireworks show lit up the sky above the harbor creating beautiful reflections on the water’s surface.

Here, I’ve enlarged a part of the reflection from the image above, to give you a more detailed view of the reflection ripples.

If you have a large monitor, you may be able to see a larger version of these images by clicking on each one.

This is the first of several photos I’ll post from the annual Trout Festival held in Kewaunee, WI.

I make it a point to position myself close to the Kewaunee harbor water’s edge because I also want to capture the reflections in the water which I think are as beautiful as the fireworks, themselves.  I particularly like the way the white reflections stand out among the deep red in this one.

I’m afraid the small size format of my blog doesn’t do these images justice, since a larger view is required to see the fine details and fully appreciate them. If you have a larger monitor, you can click on the photo to see a larger version.

Fireworks Watercolor

Fireworks, Harbor, Full Moon, Reflection, KewauneeThis image is one of my favorites from the series I took at Kewaunee’s Trout Festival fireworks show.

I wouldn’t consider the fireworks burst the best of the bunch I took, but I find the reflection on the water awesomely spectacular. The purples, the reds, the greens…a literal watercolor painting in the harbor.  The full moon is showing off a bit, too.

Full Moon and Fireworks

Fireworks, Moon, Full Moon, Reflection, Water, Kewaunee

The folks who attended the 2011 Kewaunee Trout Festival enjoyed two spectacular displays…the fireworks show and a full moon.

I positioned myself at nearly surface level with the Kewaunee harbor in order to capture the reflection off the water.  I think the reflections are as appealing as any other part of the images.  In fact, I’m considering combining a number of the firework reflections to create a colorful image of its own.

Fireworks, Burst

This was my first opportunity to capture fireworks with my Sony SLT-A55V.  I wish the fireworks show was a few hours long, rather than a few minutes.  I need that kind of time to really experiment with settings and angles, etc.

For my photography friends, here are some of the specifics… Of course, I had the camera on a tripod, had it in manual mode, on the “Bulb” setting and used a remote trigger…F/11.0, ISO 200, 13-seconds, 28.0 mm.

I’m pleased with a number of the images I captured and will be posting more, so check back. Or, better yet, just subscribe to the RSS Feed.

Both of these images (especially the smaller one) are better when bigger – so click them to see a larger view.

Angel in the Works

Fireworks, Reflection, Angel, Kewaunee

Here’s a happy photography accident.  To me, it looks like an angel in white showed up to take part in the festivities during the fireworks display above the harbor at Kewaunee, Wisconsin.  This image was captured during their July 3rd celebration of Independence Day 2023.

This is not any kind of photo magic. This is the way the separate rocket bursts were recorded. Love the colors.

Where There’s Smoke

Night, Fireworks, Smoke, July 4th, Kewaunee, WI
A lot of smoke from previous bursts added a dramatic effect to the sky for this cluster of fireworks at the annual Independence Day celebration at Kewaunee, WI.

As I mentioned in my previous post, the weather was very pleasant – in fact a perfect night on the lake shore – but there was little air movement. What little air movement there was, moved toward us from the direction we were viewing the fireworks. As a result, the smoke from the fireworks hung in the air and, as you can see here, obstructed our view at times. Still, a great time was had by all.
