The Early Bird
Not many are up early enough to catch the sunrise. How many beautiful scenes have been sacrificed on the altar of another hour’s sleep.
This sunrise was enjoyed by a bluebird in our back yard…and me.

Bright Light Beyond
Finally a good one! The weather and my schedule have not cooperated with me, lately. It has been weeks since I was able to photograph a nice sunrise.
Normally I’m out early on Saturday and Sunday mornings trying to capture the sunrise. The sun is rising early enough at this time of year that I was able to get out yesterday morning (Tuesday) before having to get ready for work.
This, of course, is the sun rising over Lake Michigan, beyond the lighthouse at Kewaunee, WI. Taken about 5:40 am.

To Howl For

We recently had a Perigee “Super Moon.” Unfortunately, our local weather conditions didn’t cooperate and I never got a clear shot of the moon when it was full. Still I had the itch to snap a shot of the moon, so on an early, clear morning I was able to capture this one.

Simple Pleasure
Here’s another wildflower from the forest floor. Delicate…simple…natural beauty.

Behind the Scenes
They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Often times, we “behold” obvious beauty and neglect to look further. I try to see beyond the obvious and look at subjects from different angles. I can spend a lot of time photographing a small flower like this – shooting above it, below it, one side or the other, and in this case, behind it – just trying to catch just the right angle.
Out of half a dozen or so images of this particular bloom, the shot from behind turned out to be the most appealing to me. From behind, the sunlight falling on the front of the flower gives it an iridescent quality from the back. From this angle you also pick up the very fine strands of spider web that would go unnoticed from the front.
Unrequited Love
This was a quirky combination. Start with new sprouts on this very young tree. Add it’s location; growing next to the one remaining strand of old barbed-wire fence. Top it off with some unusual light.
It was enough to make me stop, stare and snap. I thought it would work best as a high-contrast, monochrome image.
This is another image gathered while tromping through the woodlands not far from out home.

Wild Yellows
As we tromped through the woodlands in search of morel mushrooms, these yellow flowers caught my eye. I found a couple pockets of them in a marshy area.
The late afternoon light was hitting them at the right angle to make them stand out.

Anticipation
The sun is just about to inch above Lake Michigan’s horizon, just behind the lighthouse that faithfully marks the harbor at Algoma, WI.
I was hoping for a little more color from this morning’s sunrise…but, with all the lousy, overcast mornings I’ve had to endure lately, I really shouldn’t complain too much.

Under a Marble Sky
This is a companion to a color image of the same scene I posted a few days ago – the one I titled: Spring Enchantment.
I always find it interesting to compare the same scene in color and monochrome versions and see which I think is more appealing. Often times I can’t decide. I think I like the relaxing tones of the color version…but then I like the dramatic tone of this one. If I had to pick one…ummm…well… I guess I’d go with the color. The green grass won me over.

Embrace of the Sun
One of the things I like to do is catch the sun peeking from behind the Algoma, WI lighthouse. I took this image last Sunday morning on my way to church. The sun is rising pretty early in these parts right now. This photo was snapped around 5:55 am.
More clouds in the sky would have made this a more interesting image for me. The one thing I do like – and the reason I think it’s worthy of sharing – is the way the sun seems to reach around the lighthouse. The rays remind me of arms reaching around to gently, warmly caress the lighthouse. A good morning hug!
