Infinitely Glassy

Bottles, Reflection, Infinity Mirror, Glass

The infinity mirror effect of these unique glass bottles is mesmerizing.  The reflective nature of the different shaped bottles, combined with the infinity mirror effect captured my gaze for quite some time.  This is a work of modern art on display at the Milwaukee Public Museum.  I thought a monochrome treatment worked well for this display.

One of the most interesting aspects of this image – at least, for me – is the fact that you can’t see my reflection in this image.  I’m standing right in front of these reflective bottles (about 2 feet away) and there is nothing of me, or others in the room, to be seen.

Considering His Options

Dog, Brittany, PuppyThis Brittany puppy (only a couple of months old) looks directly into the camera with a thoughtful expression. You have to wonder, what he’s thinking?

This cute rascal belongs to my wife’s parents; longtime fans of the Brittany breed. We had the good fortune to be visiting when they brought him home. They named him Tucker.

Be Anxious for Nothing

Inspirational, Philippians, Girl, Relax

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” – – Philippians 4:6-6

This is a photo I took of one of the grands. She had such a carefree attitude I thought it would make a good image for this scripture.

Another Day at Work

Coneflower, Purple Coneflower, Cone Flower, BeeI found these purple coneflowers (Echinacea purpurea) blooming in the meadow of an area park last summer. The bees were busy;  hard at work…doing what bees do.

Columbine Collective

Flowers, Wildflowers, Columbine, RedI enjoy finding and photographing wildflowers. These columbines were blooming along a trail in a wooded area not far from our home in northeast Wisconsin.

Columbines are of the Aquilegia genus; a name derived from the Latin word for eagle (aquila), because of the shape of the flower petals, which are said to resemble an eagle’s claw. The common name “columbine” comes from the Latin for “dove”, due to the resemblance of the inverted flower to five doves clustered together.  They are perennial plants found in meadows, woodlands, and at higher altitudes throughout the Northern Hemisphere.

Finding Greenspace

Moth, White, Fern, Macro

I found this peaceful creature resting on a forest fern while hiking through Wisconsin woodlands. I believe it is a moth; I couldn’t tell you what kind.  It was quite small but easy to spot because of its light coloring on the dark green leaves. I truly enjoy the intricate markings of its wings.

A Little Light Reflection

Sunrise, Lighthouse, Lake Michigan, KewauneeThe waves were calm but the sky seemed to portray a warning. This red sky appeared, in the pre-sunrise morning, over Lake Michigan; behind the Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse and pier.

Scenes like this often reminded me of the old adage, “Red sky at night, sailors delight. Red sky at morning, sailors warning.”

This thinking was cited by Jesus in Matthew 16:2-3, “…When it is evening you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red’;  and in the morning, ‘It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening…”  Shakespeare wrote something similar in, Venus and Adonis. “Like a red morn that ever yet betokened, Wreck to the seaman, tempest to the field, Sorrow to the shepherds, woe unto the birds, Gusts and foul flaws to herdmen and to herds.”

According the Library of Congress website, there is some validity to this saying (within limits).  They write…

When we see a red sky at night, this means that the setting sun is sending its light through a high concentration of dust particles. This usually indicates high pressure and stable air coming in from the west. Basically good weather will follow.

A red sunrise can mean that a high pressure system (good weather) has already passed, thus indicating that a storm system (low pressure) may be moving to the east. A morning sky that is a deep, fiery red can indicate that there is high water content in the atmosphere. So, rain could be on its way.

Stumbled Upon a Slipper

Lady Slipper Orchid, Lady SlipperOn an early spring day hike we discovered this Lady Slipper Orchid blooming among the ferns at Potawatomi State Park on the shore of Sturgeon Bay in southern Door County, Wisconsin.

These flowers show up for a short time in the early spring.  Of course, to catch them during their short blooming cycle, you first have to find them.  When visiting the park, I asked one of the rangers if they had spotted any and they mentioned a couple of possible locations. Unfortunately, we didn’t find many but we were pleased to, at least, find a few.

This morning I got up early to see if I could catch a sunrise image but the sky would not cooperate. So, since I had a little time, I looked at some of the images I’d captured earlier and hadn’t taken the time to process. This is one of those shots from June of 2019.

Burned Into My Memory

Sunrise, Lighthouse, KewauneeI was able to grab a couple of shots of the Kewaunee, WI lighthouse yesterday.  Even though the sun seems to be above the horizon, this is actually a pre-sunrise shot.  That faux sun – the round, yellow area in the middle right – is not the sun.  It is just a lighter area of cloud cover that allowed a brighter area of light to escape.  The actual sunrise was still a good 15 minutes away.

The last few times I had an opportunity to get some sunrise images the weather didn’t cooperate.  It was foggy or rainy or totally dreary with clouds. Yesterday wasn’t bad and I was able to pick up a few good images.  Stay tuned – they’ll be more to come.

Great Awakening

Sunrise, Lighthouse, Kewaunee, Lake Michigan
The sky is beginning to wake up behind the Kewaunee lighthouse and pier. It was a calm morning on Lake Michigan.

This is a panoramic image – created by “stitching” together three separate shots. For the three shots combined here, I had my camera in portrait orientation. This method gives me a much wider view of the area I was photographing than a single image would capture.

One problem with this method, is it gives the waves an odd look because the water doesn’t pause its movement for the few seconds I takes to snap all three shots. So, if you look closely, you will notice the horizontal lines of the slight waves don’t line up well. The hope, of course, is that the beauty of the sky will capture your attention and you won’t pay a lot of attention to the water. (Unless you take the time to read my notes.)
