Algoma

First and Last Lights

Sunrise, Lighthouse, Algoma, Lake Michigan, Wisconsin,
As the sun breaches the horizon, bringing its first light of morning, the Algoma, Wisconsin lighthouse is bringing its last light of the night.

I’ve not had much time lately to get a lot of photography done so I began to visit the archives to see what gold I might be able to find.  This is a shot from May of 2013.  I was actually thinking of making it a monochrome image, but decided I couldn’t pass up the warm tones of that background.

When The Morning Comes

Algoma, Lighthouse, Sunrise, Silhouette, Lake Michigan
As it rises, the sun illuminates and colorfully accentuates the clouds and contrails behind the Algoma, Wisconsin lighthouse and pier. Algoma is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan.

This was taken a couple of years ago. This is actually a panorama image – where I joined three separate image together to get a wider, more detailed view.

These are the mornings that make getting up before sunrise and driving to your destination worth the effort.

Exceeding All Expectations

Pano, Panorama, Panoramic, Lighthouse, Sunrise, Algoma, Lake Michigan
The Algoma, Wisconsin lighthouse and piers stand guard over the harbor as they await the sunrise over a calm Lake Michigan morning. Algoma is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan.

As with other the images I captured and have posted from this particular morning, I’m impressed with the colors and textures in the sky and how they’re reflected in the water.

Though it doesn’t look like it here, this is a huge image.  It’s large size comes from the fact that I joined (or “stitched”) three separate shots into one image in order to capture as much of the scene as I could.  When snapping the shutter, I’m careful to overlap the edges of the shots so the software can find similar pixels and match them to each other.

Unfortunately, this panoramic format doesn’t show well here because of the limited space allotted for images.  However, as I usually do, I urge you to view its full-screen version by clicking on the photo.  Hopefully you have a large monitor – the bigger the better.

Mesmerizing Morning Blues

Algoma, WI, Lake Michigan, Blue, Sunrise, Harbor, ReflectionJust before the sun would breach the horizon, the Algoma, Wisconsin lighthouse, pier and harbor was bathed in wonderful blue hues.  I’m glad I was able to capture the sky’s reflections on the calm harbor waters. I got several good shots from my visit that morning.

I decided to try to catch the sunrise in Algoma – about 12 miles from my home. Although I started out early, I thought I was going to miss the best part of the morning light. I got out of bed at 4:30 am, looked at the sky and decide to try it.  By the time I got my gear packed and hit the road it was 4:50.  As I was driving and watching the sky, I thought I was going to miss it…or at least get there just on time and have to scramble to get some good shots.  The sunrise was at 5:24.

I was able to get to the harbor, grab my tripod and backpack of gear and ran out to the pier. Before I left home I had checked an app I use to determine the best location for getting the sun to line up somewhere close to the lighthouse. I knew just where I needed to be…on the pier. The optimal point was a little further down the pier then where this shot was taken, but I stopped on my way there to snap a few. This was the second frame I shot, so I should be posting more from this morning in the near future.

Breaking Views

Sunrise, Waves, Pier, Lake Michigan, Algoma, WI
As the sun was rising over Lake Michigan, the waves were rising over the harbor pier at Algoma, WI.

I got up early and zipped to Algoma in hopes of catching a nice sunrise.  The beautiful sunrise landscape image I was hoping for never materialized.  However, it was a windy morning with waves crashing over the pier, so I focused on capturing some of the morning wave action.

In the low light conditions, it was difficult to capture the action of the crashing waves in focus.  This is one of those shoots where I wish I could spend more time experimenting on the technical aspects.

Algoma Light & Sky – Video Slideshow

I have been wanting to produce a slideshow of my images for some time.  I finally got around to getting one done.

For my first effort, I decided to focus on sunrise images of the lighthouse and pier of Algoma, WI. Of course, I have plenty of other material to work with, as well, so that poses a couple of questions. What will be my next slideshow theme and how long before I get it completed?

I’m sure the next one will come together quicker.  This one took me much longer than I anticipated.  Finding the right software or app was a big hurdle. (I actually tried several software options before I found something simple enough to be workable, at least for me.) It took me hours just to find music I liked.  And, of course, I’m trying to create a masterpiece and stay within my budget of $0.00.

Well, now that I’ve released it to the wild, I guess I’ll find out if the beauty that was in the eye of this “beholder” resonates with others.

For the best viewing experience, I suggest you click on the “full-screen” icon in the bottom right corner of the video.

All of the images featured in this video can be found on my sight.

Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory

Pano, Panoramic, Lighthouse, Algoma, Lake Michigan
Sometimes it is difficult to fit all of the beauty in one frame. This pre-sunrise view from the harbor of Algoma, Wisconsin, took a compilation of five separate images.

The travel site, Expedia, recently named Algoma as “Most Beautiful Town” in Wisconsin.  I believe they must have been there on a day like this.  In their words…

Of the most beautiful towns in Wisconsin, Algoma, the Park of Flowers, caught our eye. It’s tucked along the shores of Lake Michigan, boasting buildings and homes that are more than 100 years old. Stare out at the shimmery waters at Crescent Beach and catch sight of the red Algoma Pierhead Lighthouse, while meandering along the boardwalk. During your visit, slip into von Stiehl Winery, the state’s oldest licensed winery, which is located in a Civil War-era building, with a terrace overlooking the lake.

This scene was photographed on the same morning I photographed, “Serious Sunrise;” an image I posted earlier.  You can view it, for comparison HERE.

This is one of those images that don’t display well in on my blog’s small page format.  You should click on the image to view a wider, full-screen, panoramic version.

Serious Sunrise

Sunrise, Algoma, WI, Lake MichiganThere was a very serious mood to this morning’s sky as the sun breached the horizon behind the lighthouse and pier at Algoma, Wisconsin.  It was a good morning to be on Lake Michigan’s western shore.

I was up early to make my way to Algoma, hoping for a worthwhile sunrise. I was not disappointed. The temperatures were cool but the sky had a warming effect…at least on the psyche.  This shot was taken from the harbor embankment at the marina.

I’ve got a few other good shots from this vantage point that I’ll be working on when time allows.  Watch for a wide, panorama shot of this morning’s sunrise in the future.

Pure Algoma

Lighthouse, Harbor, Algoma, WI, Wisconsin, Lake Michigan, Blue
The Algoma lighthouse and pier present a welcome sight to shore-side visitors and, more important, the watercraft entering and departing the small Lake Michigan harbor.

This image doesn’t contain the dramatic sunrise elements usually seen in my photos of the Algoma lighthouse.  I was there at the break of dawn, hoping for a dramatic sunrise, but it never materialized.  Still I like this photo for the clear, clean feel of the blue water and sky…with a hint of sunrise pink on the horizon.

Out of the Blue

Blue, Lighthouse, Lake Michigan, Algoma, Water, Harbor
The deep red color of the Algoma lighthouse stands in sharp contrast to the deep blue of Lake Michigan and the early morning sky above.

I have taken a lot of photos of this lighthouse.  On this trip, I was hoping for another nice sunrise.  Unfortunately, the rising sun was concealed by a band of clouds on the horizon so a true sunrise photo wasn’t in the cards. I decided to catch a low angle view of the lighthouse across the Algoma harbor.  To get this shot, I crawled down on the rocks near the mouth of the Ahnapee River, just off the marina parking lot, and held my camera just above the water.

I like this image for 1) the different perspective, 2) the reflection of the lighthouse, 3) the ripples in the water giving it depth and interest, and 4) the predominant blue color with contrasting red.
