Bluebird Babe on a Branch
This is a fledgling bluebird perched on a tree branch, bathed in the warm glow of early morning sunlight filtering through the leaves. At this age, the bluebird isn’t very blue, with muted brown and white plumage.
This is an image I captured in the yard of our rural Wisconsin home in the spring of 2023.

Safe Space
This very young raccoon kept me in its view as I walked around the tree he was sitting in. The was the last of the siblings that were hanging around our yard for a couple of weeks last summer. This was the only one I saw climbing and I was surprised by how well it was able to get up the tree for how small it was.
To add to the adorable nature of this photo, if you look closely, you will a little dirt on the tip of its nose. They would spend most of their time with their noses buried in the grass, hunting bugs and grubs and who knows what tiny raccoons eat.

Beginning Climber
This little rascal was an early climber. This is one of several baby raccoons that showed up in the yard of our rural home. We never saw an adult around. They were so young I was worried they were going to starve to death or wander out in the road and get hit.
If they weren’t sleeping under a bush in our yard, they were wandering through the yard; noses buried in the grass looking for bugs and grubs. Within a few weeks all of them seemed to have moved on. However, I did see one recently on security camera video at around 2 am, climbing down this very same tree and wandering into the farm field.

Bandits In the Bush
This pair of very young Raccoons were attentive while trying to blend into the scenery. They were photographed under a bunch of day lilies on the front lawn of our rural Kewaunee, Wisconsin home.
We came home from work one evening to find three of these little rascals roaming around our yard. We never spotted an adult. A couple of evenings later we saw four of them in at late dusk. (At least we think we did.) Still, never saw an adult.
The little ones could be seen at various times and places, with their noses planted in the grass – foraging for bugs and grubs, I imagine. After a few days we only saw two. After a few more days, we only saw one. The one stayed around for about a week.
I’m hoping they moseyed through the farm field that surrounds our house to the woods beyond. I don’t believe we have enough variety in our short grass to satisfy the appetites of a growing tribe.
I’m thankful for the short visit because they were so over-the-top cute, way fun to watch and, of course, I was able to get a number of fun photos. Watch for a couple more to show up in the near future.

Baby Bandit Alert
The epitome of “bright eyed and bushy tailed,” this very young raccoon was discovering a new world. I found this one – with three other siblings – exploring our yard this spring. We never saw any sign of their mama.

Perfect Little Piggies
I caught this sweet, newborn while napping with his perfect, little toes on display.
This is the latest edition to our family; a grandson. Born a few months ago and a few states away, this was our first opportunity to meet him. We had a great time with him and his siblings, of which you will see more of in future posts, I’m sure.
I like this photo because it does focus on the foot and those perfect little round piggies. There is, also, something very sweet and peaceful about a sleeping newborn.

Wondersome One
This darling seemed to have a look of serious thought the moment this image was snapped.
This is an image from a child portrait photo shoot. This is not the photo I would expect the parents to choose as a favorite, but it is one of my favorites from the session because of the child’s expression. To me, it conveys innocence and wonderment with a twinge of uncertainty. I also enjoy the vivid colors, the wispy curls of hair above this cutie’s ears and her holding the blade of grass.
This was a quick, portrait session. We had a baby. We had a rural setting on a spring day. We simply added a colorful blanket and found a spot in the grass with an open field and distant tree line for a background.

Sleeper Hold
There is nothing as peaceful as a sleeping baby. This little one seems comforted by holding the thumb of the one holding her.
I like this image because of the peaceful warmth it instills in me. I also love the contrast in size and age between the two hands. A great study in texture and tone.
This is an image featuring my wife and a newborn niece. A very sweet baby who was very cooperative…as sleeping babies tend to be.

Sugar and Spice
What are little girls made of? Sugar and spice and everything nice. That’s what little girls are made of.
This is a portrait of one of our granddaughters. We were blessed to have an opportunity to spend a little time with her and her parents recently.
Of course, whenever we have the pleasure of visits with any of the grandchildren, I usually try and grab a few photos. After this visit, as we were driving home, I told my wife I was disappointed that I wasn’t able to get any good photos of our granddaughter. When I downloaded the day’s images to my computer I was delighted to find this gem. This is the only decent image I captured of her on this visit, but it’s a definite keeper.

Early Adoration
At this stage, it’s hard to gain and keep their attention. I was able to captivate her…and she captivated me…for this brief moment.
This image of our newest grandchild was snapped on a recent, holiday weekend visit.
At this age, there’s not a lot of going on. She’s just beginning to notice activity around her, just beginning to smile.
