Finally a good one! The weather and my schedule have not cooperated with me, lately. It has been weeks since I was able to photograph a nice sunrise.
Normally I’m out early on Saturday and Sunday mornings trying to capture the sunrise. The sun is rising early enough at this time of year that I was able to get out yesterday morning (Tuesday) before having to get ready for work.
This, of course, is the sun rising over Lake Michigan, beyond the lighthouse at Kewaunee, WI. Taken about 5:40 am.

Under a Marble Sky
This is a companion to a color image of the same scene I posted a few days ago – the one I titled: Spring Enchantment.
I always find it interesting to compare the same scene in color and monochrome versions and see which I think is more appealing. Often times I can’t decide. I think I like the relaxing tones of the color version…but then I like the dramatic tone of this one. If I had to pick one…ummm…well… I guess I’d go with the color. The green grass won me over.

Spring Enchantment
The sunset and high clouds created a magical moment of enchanting color.
This was taken last Saturday in the farm field across the road from our rural Kewaunee, WI home. I have taken many photos of this tree because it offers some interest and perspective to the beautiful sunsets we can experience. I often wish there was an old barn or a little white chapel between me an the sunset. Until something else pops up, the tree will have to do.

Night Vision
A week ago the moon was full, temperatures were freezing and I was standing in the dark along Lake Michigan’s shore in Kewaunee, WI. I’ve never attempted to shoot the Kewaunee pier and lighthouse from this angle before. I’ll have to try it in the daylight, possibly for a sunrise, sometime.
I worked a bit to try and correct the color of this image. Unfortunately, the mercury vapor lights of the city give everything a reddish tint that I wasn’t able to tone down much without making the rest of the colors look strange.

Beacons of the Night
The rising, full moon and the Kewaunee, WI lighthouse were competing for equal billing last night.
I did a little experimenting with HDR techniques. I like the different colors created in the reflections by the orange-ish moon and the yellowish light.

Skylights
The lighthouse at Kewaunee, WI is one of my favorite subjects. This was taken early in the morning, shortly after sunrise. If you look closely, you’ll notice a little bump at the end of the pier. That’s a lone fisherman. I took this photo kneeling at the very edge of the beach while Lake Michigan gently lapped the shore.

Sky High Intensity
Late one summer afternoon, a storm front pushed through with an ominous intensity. The cloud formations were foreboding enough, but it was their eerie color that made the hair stand up on the back of your neck.
Turned out, it’s bark was worse than it’s bite.

Genesis Dawn
This was how the last day of January, 2012 began at my house. It turned out to be a beautiful day with unseasonably warm temperatures.
I was in my home office, getting some things together before leaving for work, when my wife said, “Have you seen the sky?” One quick look had me dashing for my camera; hoping to get a couple of good shots in the few minutes I had.
This is a view of the pre-sunrise sky beyond the farm field that borders my home.

Enlightening
A low hanging cloud bank was making a futile attempt to suppress the sun rising over Lake Michigan. The foreground is ice and snow covering the harbor. The black line at the edge of the ice is a flock of Canada geese waiting for the warmth of the morning sun. And, of course, the tall structure is the pier light at Algoma, WI.
I prefer the kind of sunrises where a majority of the sky turns beautiful shades of red, orange and gold. Unfortunately, I just haven’t been offered much on the days I could be out shooting. Most of them have been cold, dull, dreary days. This time of year, the days are so short, I have to leave for work before the sun rises and don’t return home until after the sun sets. My best opportunities are the weekends and weekends haven’t been cooperating lately. (I know…excuses, excuses, excuses.)

Smoldering Sunrise
The Christmas gift that keeps on giving… This is another image I captured at sunrise on Christmas morning, 2011. This lighthouse is positioned on the western shore of Lake Michigan – at the harbor opening of Algoma, WI.
Algoma has had some sort of structure providing light for navigational purposes since March 1st of 1893. This current version, standing more than 40 feet tall, has been in place since 1932.
