Partial Eclipse 2017

Solar Eclipse, Partial Eclipse, Sun, Moon, Sky, Clouds
I was able to grab an image of the partial solar eclipse that appeared, filtered by light cloud cover, over Green Bay, Wisconsin on August 21, 2017.

I was working through the eclipse but took a short break to snap a few frames.  It was a bit tricky, since I didn’t really have much time or the proper equipment to photograph an eclipse.  I didn’t have any filters and didn’t use a tripod. Thankfully the light clouds provided some filtering effect and a little texture to the image.  I also used a tall spruce tree to add some foregroud context.

To capture this image I had to use some crazy camera settings – 1/3200 sec, f/40, ISO 50, 250mm.  Never actually looking at the sky, and hand holding the camera, I used the articulating screen on the back of my camera to find the sun and quickly snap my shots.  I didn’t want to stay focused on the sun for more than a moment because without the proper filter there was a risk of damaging the image sensor.  Of course, I increased the saturation in post processing.

This isn’t the best image, technically speaking, but at least I was able to grab a glimpse of the historic event in my area.

Color Me Country

Rainbow, Rural, House, Kewaunee, WI
It doesn’t happen often, but when a rainbow appears it’s so much better when I can capture it.

On this occasion, I was mowing the lawn when it started to rain.  I turned my mower toward the garage and noticed the rainbow forming.  I parked the mower and dashed into the house for my camera and an umbrella.  I had just enough time to snap a few photos before it dissipated.

This is actually a panoramic image.  I stitched four, portrait oriented images together to capture what you see here.  My camera and lens could not capture a wide enough view to fit all of the rainbow in one shot. I may have been able to capture all of it with a different lens, but I didn’t want to take the time to change lenses and maybe miss the shot.

Spirits In the Sky – Video

July 23rd was a particularly active day for the skies in our area. I set my camera in the wheat field across the road from our home and let it record a couple of hours.

My favorite part of this video is watching the development of clouds; seemingly out of thin air.  I also think it’s cool to see the sun brighten the wheat field when it breaks through an opening in the clouds.

This video condenses two hours of real-time video into about two minutes.

One Minute Sunrise 07-20-17 – Video

This is a timelapse video of a sunrise over rural Kewaunee County, WI. This sunrise was captured behind my house on July 20, 2017. I began recording in the dark of dawn; before sunrise.

It was a windy morning which, as you can see, gave a lot of motion to lower level clouds. I put the camera on a tripod behind my house to protect it from shaking by the wind. One minute of video represents an hour of actual time.

I recently picked up an inexpensive video camera, in hopes of using it to for capture timelapse photography.  It’s a different genre of art and I have a lot to learn.

Where There’s Smoke

Night, Fireworks, Smoke, July 4th, Kewaunee, WI
A lot of smoke from previous bursts added a dramatic effect to the sky for this cluster of fireworks at the annual Independence Day celebration at Kewaunee, WI.

As I mentioned in my previous post, the weather was very pleasant – in fact a perfect night on the lake shore – but there was little air movement. What little air movement there was, moved toward us from the direction we were viewing the fireworks. As a result, the smoke from the fireworks hung in the air and, as you can see here, obstructed our view at times. Still, a great time was had by all.

Spring Coming On

Tree, Sky, Farm Field, Rural, Blue, Green
The trees are starting to sprout leaves and the crops are sporting their spring-time green in this scenic view of rural northeast Wisconsin.

A couple of days ago I was grilling steaks in my driveway.  I noticed the cool clouds filling the sky as the sun was slipping toward the horizon.  I ran inside to grab my camera, flipped the steaks on the grill and hurried across the road to an adjacent farm field.  I positioned myself to capture the sun behind a tree, standing in a field of oats.  After snapping a couple of frames, I had to hurry back to those marvelous steaks on the grill.

If you look through my collection, you will find a number images featuring this same tree and the sunset. (The Wild BlueSerene SunsetRural Sunset – to name a few)

Should Have Been There

Sunrise, Lighthouse, Lake Michigan, Kewaunee, WI, Orange
The blazing orange, pre-sunrise sky provides a brilliant background to the lighthouse and pier at Kewaunee, WI located on Lake Michigan’s western shore.

This is a compilation of three separate images, stitched together to create the full image you see here. The lens I was using was limiting my view, so to expand the viewing area I took several shots with the intention of joining them together later.  Normally the process doesn’t work well when there is movement in the frame – as you see with the waves in the foreground.  This one blended better than expected.

Rehabilitation Rising

Lighthouse, Kewaunee, Lake Michigan, Sunrise, Scaffolding
The Kewaunee, WI lighthouse has a different look lately.  It is undergoing renovation, as evidenced by the scaffolding surrounding the structure.

This was a photo taken just after sunrise from the beach at Selner Park, on the western shore of Lake Michigan. I’d heard they were sprucing up the lighthouse and decided I needed to get a photo while the work was in progress.

If you look closely, you can see a small fishing boat leaving the harbor, just visible off the end of the pier, where the sun is reflecting on the water.

Algoma Light & Sky – Video Slideshow

I have been wanting to produce a slideshow of my images for some time.  I finally got around to getting one done.

For my first effort, I decided to focus on sunrise images of the lighthouse and pier of Algoma, WI. Of course, I have plenty of other material to work with, as well, so that poses a couple of questions. What will be my next slideshow theme and how long before I get it completed?

I’m sure the next one will come together quicker.  This one took me much longer than I anticipated.  Finding the right software or app was a big hurdle. (I actually tried several software options before I found something simple enough to be workable, at least for me.) It took me hours just to find music I liked.  And, of course, I’m trying to create a masterpiece and stay within my budget of $0.00.

Well, now that I’ve released it to the wild, I guess I’ll find out if the beauty that was in the eye of this “beholder” resonates with others.

For the best viewing experience, I suggest you click on the “full-screen” icon in the bottom right corner of the video.

Sunrise Solo

Lighthouse, Kewaunee, WI, Lake Michigan, Sunrise
A solitary seagull surveys the beauty of a Lake Michigan sunrise as it emerges beyond the Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse and pier.

This is a scene from mid October, 2016.  It was a rough morning on the lake.  Of course, I was shooting from the shore, staying far enough away from the waves breaking on the beach to keep my equipment dry.  The gull was a nice addition.  It isn’t the only one in the sky.  If you view the larger version of this, you’ll be able to see a few others nearer the lighthouse.
