Hanging Tapestry

Butterfly, Eye Owl, Butterfly Palace

An owl eye butterfly rests on a branch, displaying the intricate patterns and eye-like spots on its wings. To me, is a beautiful artwork of pattern and color – like a detailed tapestry. This is one of the many varieties of butterflies cultivated and displayed at the Butterfly Palace in Branson, Missouri.

Sandhill in a Farm Field

Sandhill Crane, Crane, Bird

This Sandhill Crane was foraging through a northeast Wisconsin farm field, with its companion. This photo was taken in the fall, when their plumage is mostly gray. In the spring an summer, they appear more brown.

Sandhill cranes became regular inhabitants in our area of rural Wisconsin.  I took this photo while walking along the road near my house. It was common in the fall to have dozens flocking and foraging in the fields around our house. Very shy birds in that setting. They were hard to photograph because they would take to flight if I tried to get close.  I caught these two with a 300mm lens and had to enlarge the digital image quite a bit to be able to see any detail.

Death Warmed Over

Turkey Vulture, Vulture, Buzzard

A turkey vulture is perched and poised, with outstretched wings, to dry in the sun after a dip in a nearby creek at Stockstill Park in Branson, Missouri.

I had just seen a dozen or so of these vultures in and around the rocky creek bed.  My efforts to photograph them near the water didn’t go well due to the distance and the bright sunlight, making them seem more like dark silhouettes.  And, of course, as soon as they spotted me, they flew off.

A little further on our hike I tried to approach the creek from a different direction, where the light might be better.  As I made my way through the woods I came upon this and another vulture, holding their wings wide with their backs to the sun, to dry off from being in the water.  If you look closely, you can see this one is still quite wet.

They held their pose and position long enough for me to get close enough to get a good shot.

Close Formation

Thunderbirds, Jets, Air Force

In the air or on the ground, the United States Air Force Thunderbirds are impressive.  Not only do they fly with precision, they park with precision too. (I’ll post a photo of them flying sometime soon.)

In this image the Thunderbird’s F-16 fighters are parked on the tarmac at Rosecrans Memorial Airport in St. Joseph, MO where later in the day they will be the featured performers at the Sound of Speed Airshow.

Where the Deer and the Antelope Lay

Pronghorn Antelope, Antelope, Buck, Horns

A pronghorn antelope buck was resting in a patch of prairie in South Dakota’s Custer State Park.  He wasn’t alone.  A hundred or so yards away his harem of does (6 or 7) were grazing in the prairie. Apparently, that’s the way it works in pronghorn culture.

Blue Skies and Towering Heights

Devil's Tower, Wyoming, Rock

Devil’s Tower Monument in Wyoming is an impressive, towering rock formation. It is quite majestic against a backdrop of blue sky and scattered clouds. Pine trees and rocky terrain provide a contrast to the vertical columns of this geological marvel.

On our trip to South Dakota, we slipped across the border to visit this popular attraction. The tower has a trail that encircles it and this is one of the views from that trail.

Yellow In Season

Sunflowers, Flowers, Yellow
A sight for sore eyes. These sunflowers will brighten up anyone’s day. These were found blooming in a farm field in northeast Wisconsin.

This is actually a field of sunflowers that surrounds our rural home. Simply breathtaking when if full bloom.  Watch for more photos to come.

Flipping the Light Fantastic

Fireworks, Airplaines, Night, Long Exposure
Talk about a wild ride!  This spectacular light painting was created by a pair of acrobatic airplanes flying huge loop-the-loops in the night sky while shooting fireworks off their wings. Though this long exposure image gives the impression of a colorful chaos, it is actually very graceful and beautiful to watch. This was part of the night airshow at the EAA’s AirVenture 2019.

Because this is a long exposure shot, the people on the ground have a ghostly/blurry quality to them caused by them moving during the 26-seconds the shutter was open. The airplane on the ground didn’t move, so it remains sharp.

The night, fireworks-enhanced air show has improved over the years. You can view some long exposure shots I took at AirVenture 2013 by visiting this earlier post – Pathway to Glory.

The Flight Brothers

Aircraft, Airplanes, Flying, Vintage, P-51D Mustang, Chance-Vought F4U-4 Corsair
A beautiful historical display – these two venerated ,war birds flew together through the blue skies over Oshkosh, Wisconsin during an airshow at the EAA AirVenture 2019. The upper plane is “Quick Silver, a P-51D, Mustang. The lower plane is a Chance-Vought F4U-4 Corsair.

One of the aspects of AirVenture I appreciate most is their emphasis on honoring our veterans and the hardware our true heroes used to protect and serve. Both of these were used to protect and secure the freedom of others.
