Invasion of The Thing from Outer Space
This is a fireworks display in Manistique, Michigan on the 3rd of July of 2022. My wife and I were in the U.P. for a little getaway. While there, we took in the fireworks celebration on the eve of Independence Day.
The title might seem a bit “out there” but I look at this photo and just think it looks like some strange creature with tentacles is coming to attack this quiet village.
I find the tone and color combination in this image very appealing. Let me know your thoughts in the comment section below.

Colorful Catch of the Day
From this perspective, these fish shaped kites seem to be dangling on a stringer. The fish are actually fluttering above one another in the breeze – their bodies horizontal to the ground – tethered to an upward arching line. It’s all about perspective.
This image was created by pointing the camera up at Algoma, Wisconsin’s annual kite festival known as “Soar On the Shore.” Every year the city hosts the kite festival on the beach of its Lake Michigan shoreline. It is a very cool and colorful event. The 2024 event will be Saturday, August 17th.

Flipping the Light Fantastic
Talk about a wild ride! This spectacular light painting was created by a pair of acrobatic airplanes flying huge loop-the-loops in the night sky while shooting fireworks off their wings. Though this long exposure image gives the impression of a colorful chaos, it is actually very graceful and beautiful to watch. This was part of the night airshow at the EAA’s AirVenture 2019.
Because this is a long exposure shot, the people on the ground have a ghostly/blurry quality to them caused by them moving during the 26-seconds the shutter was open. The airplane on the ground didn’t move, so it remains sharp.
The night, fireworks-enhanced air show has improved over the years. You can view some long exposure shots I took at AirVenture 2013 by visiting this earlier post – Pathway to Glory.

Rain of Fire
An impressive burst of cascading color from the annual Shanty Days festival at Algoma, WI. The fireworks display is a crowd favorite that closes out the summer, weekend celebration.

Look! Up In the Sky! It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s…
…an Elephant…a Giraffe…a Shark…a teenie-weenie Cow…and other assorted colorful things.
Though they look more like creatively shaped balloons, these are kites – flying high at the Kites Over Lake Michigan kite festival at Two Rivers, WI.
The cow is my favorite!
