Kewaunee

Skyward Inspiration

Sunrise, Lighthouse, Morning, Kewaunee, Wisconsin, Lake Michigan

The sky above Lake Michigan and the lighthouse at Kewaunee, Wisconsin had an inspirational feel to it, complete with calm, reflective water, the dramatic, yet warm, glow of sunlight filtered through textured clouds, a lone fisherman on the pier and a formation of geese high overhead.

This image was taken on a Saturday morning.  I was glad to capture the geese flying though the scene, as it doesn’t happen often.  (At least, not often enough for me.)

Sea of Gulls

Sea Gulls, Lake Michigan, Kewaunee, Lighthouse, Wisconsin, Sunrise, Sunset

Seagulls take to flight before the Kewaunee, Wisconsin pier and lighthouse as the sun rises over Lake Michigan.

Yesterday I was on the beach to photograph the sunrise.  I had finished started walking back to the car, ready to head home to grab breakfast before going to work.  As I neared the parking lot, I noticed a large number of seagulls resting on the beach.  I figured, as I got closer, they would eventually take off.  So I prepared my camera for the shot.

When they began to take off, with my camera at arm’s length, I just pointed in their direction and snapped away – one-handed because I was carrying my tripod in the other.  Looking directly into the brightness of the sun, I really couldn’t see what I was shooting, so I was rather pleased with what I saw when I downloaded the morning’s images to my computer.

Optimist’s Moon

Lighthouse, Full Moon, Kewaunee, Wisconsin, Lake Michigan

This is the Kewaunee, Wisconsin pier and lighthouse, on the western shore of Lake Michigan.

A pessimist might look at this moon and say it was half-empty. An optimist, on the other hand, would see it as half-full. It was, indeed a full moon, partially obscured by clouds.

If you read the previous post, you know how difficult getting the right full moon shot can be.  This was taken the night before the Algoma Night Lights shot.  This one wasn’t as bad, but it wasn’t the ideal shoot either.  Again, I started out at the wrong spot – too far south – to include the moon and the lighthouse in the same shot.  by the time I got in a suitable location, the moon started to slip behind some clouds.  This was as much of the moon as I got. Each consecutive shot shows less and less until it’s gone.

The best shot of this moon was actually captured through the trees in my back yard after I returned home. Check out my previous post:  Mystic Moon

Memorial Morning

Lighthouse, Sunrise, Sunset, Beach Grass

I call this image Memorial Morning because it is one of several I took on Memorial Day, May 27, 2013.

It was a great morning for colorful skies.  In this image the sun was above the lighthouse and filtered by thin clouds.  It created a very interesting light.  Taking the photo from shore gave me an opportunity to put some beach grass in the foreground – another point of interest.

Daffodil Standout

Daffodil, Unusual, Yellow, Orange, Red, Flower, Spring

I was out taking photos of one of my favorite lighthouses and spotted some daffodils on the drive home. I stopped and took photos of the normal yellow variety and then thought to drive around Kewaunee, WI to see if I could find more.

This is one from a home that had an impressive display, featuring many varieties.  I spent quite a bit of time snapping daffodils.

Wave Action

lighthouse, Kewaunee, Wisconsin, Lake Michigan, Waves, Water

I was photographing a sunrise from the beach in Kewaunee, WI.  Usually the Lake Michigan is calm in the early morning hours. On this particular morning, there was a little bit of surf.  I moved my tripod closer to the water’s edge and tried to capture the small waves as they splashed on the shore.  This is one of those attempts.

Afterwards, I thought of several things I could have tried (camera settings) to make this better.  I’ll have to give it another whirl…the next time I’m on the beach and the water is rough.

Fishing Light

Full Moon, Lighthouse, Kewaunee, Wisconsin, Night, Evening, Lake Michigan

The full moon and lighthouse presented a dramatic backdrop for a couple preparing to fish off the pier at Kewaunee, Wisconsin. When ready, they would cast a seine net over the side and illuminate the surface of the water with their lantern, hoping to attract small Lake Michigan fish – smelt.

The evening was much darker than it appears in this image and I was a lot farther away than one would think at first glance. I was on shore which put the lighthouse about 750 feet away.  The moon had to be at least three or four times that far. 😉

Dreamsicle

Lighthouse, Sunrise, Kewaunee, WI, Wisconsin, Lake Michigan, Sunset

Something about the color of the sky and reminded me of Dreamsicles.

This, of course, is the lighthouse and pier at Kewaunee, Wisconsin. The rising sun is positioned directly behind the navigational marker on the other side of the channel leading to the harbor.  This was the sunrise, as I saw it, on Saturday, April 20, 2013.
