Beacons of the Night
The rising, full moon and the Kewaunee, WI lighthouse were competing for equal billing last night.
I did a little experimenting with HDR techniques. I like the different colors created in the reflections by the orange-ish moon and the yellowish light.

Skylights
The lighthouse at Kewaunee, WI is one of my favorite subjects. This was taken early in the morning, shortly after sunrise. If you look closely, you’ll notice a little bump at the end of the pier. That’s a lone fisherman. I took this photo kneeling at the very edge of the beach while Lake Michigan gently lapped the shore.

Here a Goose, There a Goose, Everywhere a…
It was an extraordinarily windy day along the Lake Michigan shore. I was out taking photos of the rolling, crashing waves on the lake. On the way home, while driving home something unusual caught my eye.
There were hundreds of Canada geese floating in the harbor at Kewaunee, WI. They had retreated to the calm waters, waiting out the strong winds. Nearly all of them were facing in the same direction… facing into the wind. It just struck me as interesting and worthy of a photo.

This was a photo where the star of the show is light. It’s a winter sunrise taken at the sparkling, snow-covered beach in Kewaunee, WI.

Band of Gold
The only visible evidence of Saturday’s sunrise behind the Kewaunee, WI lighthouse was a horizontal strip of color. This image was taken from shore. The “rocks” in the foreground are really chunks of ice and dirt.

Genesis Dawn
This was how the last day of January, 2012 began at my house. It turned out to be a beautiful day with unseasonably warm temperatures.
I was in my home office, getting some things together before leaving for work, when my wife said, “Have you seen the sky?” One quick look had me dashing for my camera; hoping to get a couple of good shots in the few minutes I had.
This is a view of the pre-sunrise sky beyond the farm field that borders my home.

Sailing Past the Sun
Here’s an artsy, surreal, minimalist kind of image for you.
One morning last fall I visited the beach in Kewaunee to capture the morning’s sunrise. There was a good deal of low fog muting the sun. I happened to snap just as a sea gull flew by.

Mellow Morning in Kewaunee
The sun is just slipping above the horizon of Lake Michigan, providing a very mellow mood to this view of the lighthouse at Kewaunee, WI.
This is similar to another image I posted in mid December that I entitled Serenity Beach. They are very similar in composition, but differ greatly in tone. The difference is just a matter of minutes in time. It’s a great illustration of the rapidly changing mood of early morning light. (Click the link and compare them. Which do you like best?)

Kewaunee Lighthouse in B&W
The simplicity of this photo is what appeals to me most. It’s not a dramatic, eye-popping image. It’s a simple, normal view of the lighthouse at Kewaunee, WI…taken early one morning from the beach.

View from Shore
I know most people prefer to sleep in on Saturday mornings. Not me. I’m up before the sun and scouting out potential, natural beauty. For me, another hour or two of sleep just isn’t worth what I might miss on a calm morning in the pre-sunrise glow.
This is one of my favorite Saturday morning locations. This was the scene just before the sun appeared over Lake Michigan and the lighthouse at Kewaunee, WI…as viewed from the beach.
