Take The Stairs

Metal, Steel, Iron, Stairway, StairsThis is an old, metal stairway brightened by a light from above. The angles, the distressed ceiling and walls plus the light coming from the second floor as well as a small window just to the left give this image a lot of character.

I debated with myself for some time over whether to present this as you see here, in color, or to make it monochrome. I like both versions, but decided on the color version. I will likely share the B&W version at a future date.

Sun Kissed

Sunrise, Beach, Kewaunee, Wisconsin, Lighthouse, Lake Michigan
A relaxing morning on the shore of Lake Michigan as the sun rises behind clouds and the Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse and pier.

This is an image I took last May and just never got around to processing it.  I love the gentle roll of waves and the reflection of the sun on the water, leading to shore.  I did post a monochrome image from this same morning awhile back – “Praise From On High.”

Drawn to The Light

Lighthouse, Kewaunee, WI, Lake Michigan, Monochrome, B&W

The light dances upon the waves of Lake Michigan as it gently leads you to the Kewaunee lighthouse and the powerful sun beyond.

I snapped this image some time ago and finally got around to processing it. I decided to make it a monochrome image, intentionally making it softer is some areas and gritty in others.

I particularly like the cross lines created by the tiny light reflections on the waves; much more so than the lines radiating from the sun. This was taken from shore using a telephoto lens.

Organic Skyscrapers

Flowers, Lupine, Lupines, Garden, Colorful
This is a gorgeous stand of Lupines blooming in a flowerbed in front of a home in the small town of Kewaunee, Wisconsin.

These flowers caught my eye one day as I drove by the home where they reside. I made note of them and determined to come back sometime. A day or two later, I was in Kewaunee to photograph the sunrise. After I’d gotten all the sunrise I wanted, I remembered the lupines. It was still early without much natural light because the surrounding trees were blocking any effects of the recent sunrise. To minimize any blur due to the low shutter speed required by the low light conditions (1/10 sec), I set my camera on a tripod to capture this shot.

You can see more of the colorful detail in this shot by viewing the full-screen version. To do so, simply click on the photo.

30 Second Sunrise – Kewaunee, WI – 06-09-18

One morning, when I was at the beach in Kewaunee, Wisconsin to photograph the sunrise, I set a small video camera on the hill of the park and let it record the sunrise.  This is the result.  The camera doesn’t provide the highest quality but I think it is still interesting.

The most impressive part of this video is the gradual transformation of the sky; the changing colors and moving clouds.  The most interesting part of this video are the little dots that move from left to right. They are the fishing boats leaving the Kewaunee harbor in the early morning hours. If you watch closely, you can also see two fishermen walking along the pier to fish at the end, near the lighthouse.

Praisin’ In The Grass

Sunrise, Lighthouse, Lake Michigan, Beach Grass, Morning
It was a calm morning on Lake Michigan just before the sunrise. This view of the Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse and pier was viewed among the beach grass on shore.

This turned out to be a good morning to catch the sunrise. (06/19/18) I decided to grab this shot, a few feet away from the shore line, for a different perspective. It was still pretty dark when this image was captured. You’ll notice, the lighthouse light is still on. My shutter speed was set at 1/4 sec. It was a very calm morning.

Show Me Your Wonder

Kewaunee, WI, Sunrise, Beach, Lake Michigan, CloudsThe beach at Kewaunee, Wisconsin is the perfect place to catch a dramatic scene as the sun rises behind their lighthouse and long pier.

This was a great morning to be on the beach with the sky providing a nice show and a few sunbeams. Not many were at the beach to experience it; just me and a young couple cuddling with themselves and their smartphone.

This image is actually a panorama – where I “stitched” two photos together to include more of the scene than is possible with a single frame.  Usually, my panoramic images are pictures that are joined side-by-side. This image is comprised of two images stacked, one on the other. With my camera in “landscape” orientation I took a photo of the lower half with the lake and the beach and then a photo of the upper half with the sun and clouds. Together they give you the taller, “portrait” orientation image you see here.

Of course, the final image is nearly twice the size and resolution of a normal photo, giving you more detail. To see that some of that detail, click on the photo and a new browser tab will open with a full-screen version of this image. Then, to zoom in, click on the full-screen image.

Praise from On High

Monochrome, B&W, Lighthouse, Sunbeams, Kewaunee, Sunrise
The bright, morning sun and a congregation of clouds created a dramatic scene over the Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse and pier; located on the western shore of lake Michigan.

When I woke up, I saw promising clouds in the sky and made my way to the lake shore to catch the sunrise. I got some good shots as the sun made its assent but decided to hang around a bit longer to see if the sun would produce a few sunbeams once it got higher in the sky. As you can see, the wait paid off.

I decided to make the image monochrome because I believe the subtle contrast between light and dark are easier to detect when you are viewing the monochrome tones, as opposed to multiple colors.

This image was captured from Selner Park. Normally I get my shots from the beach but this shot was taken from a slightly elevated position – about half-way up the stairway from the parking lot to the upper level of the park.

Bringing the Heat

Kewaunee, Lighthouse, Sunrise, Lake Michigan
The sun was proving it was a force to be reckoned with.  It seemed to be burning through the clouds to make itself the prominent feature of this seascape scene.

This, of course, is the lighthouse and pier at Kewaunee, Wisconsin; on the western shore of Lake Michigan.  This is sunrise view from June of 2014.

A Distant Hope

Sunrise, Winter, Cold, Ice, Lighthouse, Lake Michigan, Kewaunee
In the midst of winter, beyond the horizon is hope for a brighter and warmer future. This is a winter sunrise view of the Kewaunee, WI pier and lighthouse – located on the western shore of Lake Michigan.

This is a view from the winter of 2014. This was taken from the shore, above the beach.

I was in the mood for a sunrise but the conditions have not afforded me much of an opportunity to a good one lately, so I browsed the archives and found this worthy contender. You can view another another image that was taken earlier the same morning.  I titled it, “Icing On the Lake”
