Hear Me Roar

Night

Slipping Toward Twilight

Milwaukee, Twilight, River, River Walk, Evening, Blue, City, Cityscape
Shades of night are slipping into the River Walk area of downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

I was fortunate to spend some time doing some night photography with an experienced photographer from the Milwaukee area. It’s always great, when away from home, to have a photographer familiar with the location give you benefit of their experience.

Big City Serenity

Night, Milwaukee, River, Lights, Reflection, Downtown
I was able to connect with a photographer friend on a recent trip to Milwaukee, WI.  He graciously took me to a few locations for nighttime photography. I thought this one turned out well.

Along Milwaukee’s river walk, there are a number of downtown locations where a beautiful scene can be captured.

Curly At Lambeau

Curly Lambeau, Statue, Lambeau Field, Green Bay Packers,
Visitors to Lambeau Field – home of the Green Bay Packers – are greeted by larger-than-life statues of legendary coach, Vince Lombardi, and the founder, player and first coach, Curly Lambeau. (The one pictured here.)  Lambeau coached the Packers for 31 years and is the one person most responsible for the existence of the Green Bay Packers franchise.

I previously posted a photo of the Vince Lombardi statue Here.

Popular Night Spot

Full Moon, Lighthouse, Lake Michigan, Kewaunee, WI, Night, People
A number of people waited near the lighthouse, at the end of the long, Kewaunee, WI pier, to watch the full moon rise above Lake Michigan.

This was an August full moon. The small lights you see on the horizon are fishing boats out on the lake.  I took this photo from the beach with a large zoom lens.

EAA Fireworks – 2013

Fireworks, Airshow, Aircraft, EAA

It’s no secret, especially to those who follow this blog, I like fireworks.  This is one of my favorite fireworks photos.

The fireworks are pretty cool, but my favorite part is the people.  The people are my favorite part because of where they are.  If you look closely, you’ll notice airplanes parked among the people.

This is a view from the fireworks display at the Experimental Aircraft Association’s 2013 AirVenture – held every year in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Pathway to Glory

Airshow, Night, Fireworks, EAA

Fireworks, Airshow, Night, EAAThese are all images taken at AirVenture in Oshkosh Wisconsin – the annual convention of the Experimental Aircraft Association. These are long exposure images snapped during the night airshow. The above photo was a 32-second exposure, the image to the right was 8, the image below was 35.

How were these graceful forms created? An airplane flew an acrobatic routine with some kind of sparkly fireworks shooting from the wings. To capture the action, I had my camera on a tripod and positioned on the area of sky where I guessed the plane would be flying. These were my best guesses and even these have moments where the plane went beyond the camera’s view…and came back.

The long exposure captures the brightest light from the aircraft’s flight pattern. In the dark, the aircraft, itself, wasn’t bright enough or in one spot long enough to be registered by the camera’s sensor.

If you look closely, you’ll see stars that show up as little white dashes. The whisps, particularly noticeable in the bottom photo, are the smoke left behind from the fireworks.

Larger Light Looming

Full Moon, Fresnel Lamp, Fresnel Lens, Kewaunee, WI, Wisconsin,

As powerful as the Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse lamp may be, it is no match for the power and majesty of the full moon of March 27, 2013.

I was pleasantly surprised at how well this image turned out; at how clearly the Fresnel lens of the lighthouse can be seen.  The surprising part…this photo was taken from the shore.  Anyone familiar with the Kewaunee lighthouse knows the lighthouse sits at the end of a very long pier that extends 750 feet from shore.

To get this image I used a 300mm lens with a 2X teleconverter (effectively doubling the reach of the lens).  It is simply luck that the focus was as sharp as it is since I had to focus manually. (A number of other shots that night were not so sharp.)  Under low light conditions, particularly with the teleconverter, the camera’s auto-focus doesn’t work.

Normally, without the brightness of the full moon behind it, the lighthouse lamp would show up as a big, bright white blob.

This nightscape features the lighthouse at Kewaunee, WI – on the western shore of Lake Michigan.  The full moon was shrouded behind a layer of clouds.

I didn’t realize it until I was preparing this post…. If you use a little imagination while looking at the moon behind the clouds, it can look like the head of some kind of creepy ghoul.  (I see two eyes and an open mouth. Yikes!)
