The colors of autumn leaves are always a treat. This year was an exceptional year. Still, I don’t feel I got enough images. But, as we often say…there’s always next year.

Twirling Floral Skirt
Beside my wife’s flower bed, sprouting from a crack in the sidewalk, we have a cluster of sweet, tiny, pink poppies that appeared on their own.
I took this photo in the early morning hours. I call it Twirling Floral Skirt because it reminds me of a young girl spinning around to make her skirt flow out.

Queen’s Morning
Yesterday morning started with a light blanket of fog. As the sun pushed it’s way up through the foggy horizon, it created a nice silhouette of some Queen Anne’s Lace that grows at the edge of the field of oats that is next to lawn of our country home.

Amber Waves
Just before sunrise, the sky took on an amber hue and the clouds seemed to mirror the calm wave action of the water.
In the distance, you can see the pier and lighthouse of Kewaunee, Wisconsin.

Fixin’ to Bloom
In photography, sometimes lighting is everything.
This is simple Queen Anne’s Lace. It is just beginning to open up to that flat base of tiny white flowers.
The lighting and color of the background are what make this a worthwhile post. The light was provided by a rising sun. The background is a simple concrete wall – the foundation of our home.
This kind of lighting is why the times around sunrise and sunset are called the “Golden Hour” in photography.

Poppy’s Purple Passion
This time of year you’ll see me post a lot of flowers. After the long winter, they are hard to resist.
This is a close -up of the very first Poppy to pop in Sara’s flower bed. I took the photo two days ago and it’s already gone – the victim of a strong breeze. However, there are several others that have taken it’s place.
Poppies are some of our favorites. I suspect I’ll post more before the blooming is done.

First on the Scene
Make a note on the calendar – the first lily to display its beauty at our house this season happened on Wednesday, June 29th. As you can see, there will be many others to follow, but there’s something noteworthy about the first one. 
I’ve been keeping my photographer’s eye on the flower bed and could see the bloom was about to begin. The slender, green pods were beginning to blush.
For comparison, I took a picture of the same lily at the beginning of its opening, in the early morning light of the rising sun. (The smaller image on the right.) This would have been a good time to set up a time-lapse camera – if I had one.
The “grand opening” continued through the day until full bloom, as captured in the larger photo, taken in the early evening of the same day.

Sunrise Siren Call
I had plenty to accomplish this morning before going to work. My mind wasn’t on photography, but when I stepped out our back door (on my way to fill the bird feeders for the day) I was captivated by this amazing morning sky. I had stuff to do. I already have plenty of sunrises in my photo collection. (Just browse through this blog or type “sunrise” in the search box.) Still, I couldn’t help myself. I had to grab this image. This was a morning I wish I was at one of the nearby harbors – to catch the reflection off the water, too.
This is actually the compilation of seven separate photos “stitched” together. The blog page, because of its size limitations, doesn’t do it justice. If you click on the photo, you can see a larger version…but, in my opinion, it’s still too small to get anywhere close to the full effect.
