Praisin’ In The Grass

Sunrise, Lighthouse, Lake Michigan, Beach Grass, Morning
It was a calm morning on Lake Michigan just before the sunrise. This view of the Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse and pier was viewed among the beach grass on shore.

This turned out to be a good morning to catch the sunrise. (06/19/18) I decided to grab this shot, a few feet away from the shore line, for a different perspective. It was still pretty dark when this image was captured. You’ll notice, the lighthouse light is still on. My shutter speed was set at 1/4 sec. It was a very calm morning.

Show Me Your Wonder

Kewaunee, WI, Sunrise, Beach, Lake Michigan, CloudsThe beach at Kewaunee, Wisconsin is the perfect place to catch a dramatic scene as the sun rises behind their lighthouse and long pier.

This was a great morning to be on the beach with the sky providing a nice show and a few sunbeams. Not many were at the beach to experience it; just me and a young couple cuddling with themselves and their smartphone.

This image is actually a panorama – where I “stitched” two photos together to include more of the scene than is possible with a single frame.  Usually, my panoramic images are pictures that are joined side-by-side. This image is comprised of two images stacked, one on the other. With my camera in “landscape” orientation I took a photo of the lower half with the lake and the beach and then a photo of the upper half with the sun and clouds. Together they give you the taller, “portrait” orientation image you see here.

Of course, the final image is nearly twice the size and resolution of a normal photo, giving you more detail. To see that some of that detail, click on the photo and a new browser tab will open with a full-screen version of this image. Then, to zoom in, click on the full-screen image.

Three Amigos

Daffodil, Daffodils, White, Orange, Spring
I found these vibrant daffodils brightening up a small park in rural Kewaunee county, Wisconsin. This is a positive sign that spring has finally sprung in our neighborhood.

Near Bruemmer Park and Winter Park, on Kewaunee County’s highway F, is a small log cabin.  In front of this cabin is a boulder with a bronze plaque that is dedicated to the achievements of Ransom Asa Moore; dated 1929.  The plaque states, “As superintendent of schools of this county and as agronomist, and a builder of the Short Course in Agriculture at the University of Wisconsin, this tablet is placed near his birthplace and where in 1881, he first taught school.”

In this humble park area, there are a variety of daffodils that dot the park grounds in early spring. I usually try to make sure I stop by each spring to capture some of the beauty. There are other flowers that bloom through the summer, as well. I’ve used it as a setting for portraits in the past.

Bringing the Heat

Kewaunee, Lighthouse, Sunrise, Lake Michigan
The sun was proving it was a force to be reckoned with.  It seemed to be burning through the clouds to make itself the prominent feature of this seascape scene.

This, of course, is the lighthouse and pier at Kewaunee, Wisconsin; on the western shore of Lake Michigan.  This is sunrise view from June of 2014.

Springy

Flowers, Daffodil, Daffodils, Spring, MacroWhen the daffodils are blooming, you can be confident spring has sprung. I found these delicate beauties at a local park on a cool but bright spring morning.

This is a image that is worth viewing the larger version. If you have a large monitor you’ll see more detail in the petal’s texture and flower centers. To see the full-screen version, click on the photo.

A Distant Hope

Sunrise, Winter, Cold, Ice, Lighthouse, Lake Michigan, Kewaunee
In the midst of winter, beyond the horizon is hope for a brighter and warmer future. This is a winter sunrise view of the Kewaunee, WI pier and lighthouse – located on the western shore of Lake Michigan.

This is a view from the winter of 2014. This was taken from the shore, above the beach.

I was in the mood for a sunrise but the conditions have not afforded me much of an opportunity to a good one lately, so I browsed the archives and found this worthy contender. You can view another another image that was taken earlier the same morning.  I titled it, “Icing On the Lake”

Apis Workers’ Party

Honeybees, Bees, Hive, Macro
This group of honey bees were busy gathering the small amount of honey that remained in some old honeycomb.

This is a “composite” image. To create this image I focused my camera on an area where the bees were working and locked down the position on my tripod. Then, I snapped a number of photos when bees were in the frame. Then I combined several of the images – with bees in various positions – in Photoshop. All of the bees you see in the image were exactly where you see them…but not all at the same moment in time.

I had it in my mind to create this image since the day I snapped the photos last June. I finally got around to taking the time to combine the bunch. There were four separate shots used to make the image you see here.

This is one you should view full screen. You can see some great detail in the in the bees. To bring up a full-screen image, just click on the photo.

Splashed Onto the Scene

Splash, Lake Michigan, Lighthouse, Sunrise, KewauneeEven a gentle wave can make a big splash if it encounters a solid obstacle on the shore. Some wood that drifted ashore on the beach in Kewaunee, WI, provided a splash point for the waters of Lake Michigan.  Not exactly sure, but It looked like the roof of small small shed.

The Kewaunee lighthouse, seen in the background, was surrounded by scaffolding during its renovation in the summer of 2017.  This was a June capture.

If you have a large monitor, take advantage of it to view a full-screen version of this image simply by clicking on the photo.

Kewaunee Consummation

Sunrise, Kewaunee, Lighthouse, Lake Michigan, PanoramaLines, angles, clouds, color and light converge on the Kewaunee lighthouse and pier to create a panoramic morning view.

This is the compilation of three separate images, stitched together to create a wider view than would be possible with a single frame.

Just looking at the photo, you get the impression that it was a warm morning. That was not the case. It was a very cool, fall morning; near freezing.

Dawn Patrol

Lighthouse, Sunrise, Geese, Sea Gulls, Kewaunee,
On any given morning, you can find Canada geese and sea gulls patrolling the area around the Kewaunee, WI lighthouse. They seem like a vigilant group; quick to sound an alarm when intruders are detected.

This was the scene yesterday morning from the beach just north of Selner Park, on the shore of Lake Michigan. I was able to get out early and snapped a number of nice shots. I’ll try to post more from this morning in the near future.
