Sunrise and Splendor
A magnificent, pre-sunrise, panoramic display by the morning sky and clouds seems to envelop the Kewaunee lighthouse and pier. The warm reflection off Lake Michigan’s calm waters only accentuates the exhibition.
I’ve always believed, the best part of a sunrise is not the sun, but the clouds. The sun creates the light and color, but the clouds provide the character. Not heavy cloud cover, but the light, wispy kind that provide natural texture and interest to a scene. To me, a cloudless sunrise is pretty bland.
It seems I’ve been writing a lot about how I don’t often post panoramic images because their wide-view perspective doesn’t fit well within the typical web site parameters. Well, I must be on a bit of a panoramic kick these days, because I’ve posted more panoramas in the last few weeks than I have in as many years. I guess, when the mood and the beauty hits me, I can’t pass it up. It’s a little more work in processing, but I believe the results are well worth it.

Tall Drink of Comfort
The sky above, the water below and the sun rising over its shoulder all combine to make a warm, comforting atmosphere around the Kewaunee, WI lighthouse. This image was captured on the western shore of Lake Michigan, just south of the pier in Kewaunee.
This is a panoramic image. Usually we think of panoramas as being wide, horizontal images. In this case, I wanted more of the sky and water in the shot than a single frame would allow, so I combined three frames (high, middle and low) to create a tall image. The changing hue in the upper sky adds to the interest of this image, as does the sun’s reflection dancing along the ripples of the lake.
As I’ve said before, I don’t normally post many panoramas because they don’t display well within the size constraints of most webpages. This one would be truly awesome if you could view it very large. It is a large file and could be printed as tall as eight feet. Wouldn’t that would be cool!

Beyond the Harbor
This is a panoramic view at the mouth of the harbor at Algoma, WI; on the western shore of Lake Michigan.
A couple of weeks ago I set out to capture a sunrise, but as you can see, the sun was blocked by the thick clouds on the horizon. The best feature of the morning were the lighter clouds, highlighted by the hidden sun, that filled the sky above.
To capture this wide-angle view, I took four separate photos and combined them for the final image you see here.

Happy Hollow Scene
Who wouldn’t love to be in the woods on a beautiful autumn day, strolling through the hills and hollows, on a colorful carpet that provides a comforting crunch with each step. It’s a magical time in a magical place – the woodlands of northeast Wisconsin.
This is one of those images I like the more I gaze upon it. This is a patch of woods beyond the field behind our house. It’s full of colors and contours and peace.
It’s difficult to get a view like this in the middle of the woods. This wasn’t a clearing. I couldn’t get any distance between me and the trees…because the trees are everywhere. To get this wide view, I had to turn my camera sideways, to a portrait orientation, and take six overlapping shots that I combined into one.
This is the kind of image I wish I could print billboard size…or large enough to fill an entire wall. It would be spectacular…like being there. Needless to say, the larger you see this scene, the greater the experience. To get a full-screen view, click on the photo.

Wide Scene Format
The sky offered larger-than-life beauty but to take advantage of the opportunity I would have to take several photos and join them together to capture this wide, panoramic view.
This is a sunrise over Lake Michigan, behind the Kewaunee, WI pier and lighthouse. I like the way this photo gives the viewer a good idea of just how long this pier extends into the lake.
Because I combined four separate images (each 24mb) to create this image, it resulted in a huge file. The file was large enough to choke my computer to a near standstill. It took me many hours, twiddling my thumbs while it processed, to arrive at the final product.
Unfortunately, the narrow format of my website doesn’t do justice to the panoramic view. To view a larger version – one that will stretch the full width of your monitor – click on the image.
Panoramic Perspective
The clouds and the early morning light created a magical panoramic view. I snapped this yesterday morning from the beach in Kewaunee, WI.
I’m sorry the format of this blog is not conducive to getting a good view of panorama images. You can get a better view by clicking on the image.
I really wanted a huge sailboat to glide into this photo. How cool would that look. I also managed to snagged a few black-and-white images from this morning that I’ll post in the future.
Farm Field Sunrise
Here’s a view of this morning’s sunrise (07/14/11) from my back yard – taken at the edge of a farm field.
Our home is surrounded by farm fields. It gives a mostly clear view of the sky in all directions. Which is why take a lot of sunrises and sunsets.
