Relaxed Demeanor

Burrow, Donkey, Animal

A friendly burro was happy to greet visitors to Custer State Park in South Dakota. This is one of a dozen or more – in a variety of colors and sizes – that strolled by to say, “Hi!”

When we visit Custer State Park, we have to spend time with the burrows.  They roam free through the park and are quite docile and happy to help you dispose of any excess apples and carrots.

Patas Monkey See

Monkey, Patas Monkey,

A patas monkey stares through the leaves of a plant in its enclosure at the Topeka Zoo. It really had no interest in me; looking the other way. I made a noise that momentarily brought this annoyed gaze my way.

Touch of Teal

Wood Duck, Duck

A darling wood duck stands gracefully on a moss-covered perch at the edge of a rippling pond. In my mind, the highlight of this image is that little patch of teal on the wings. Such an appealing color.

I grabbed this shot while walking through the zoo in Topeka, KS. This was at one of their small ponds outside; not in any kind of enclosure.

Gear Up

C-130, Lockheed C-130 Hercules, Airplane, Aircraft

This is the “H2” variant of the Lockheed C-130H Hercules tactical airlift aircraft rising above the runway at Rosecrans Memorial Airport during the Speed of Sound Airshow in September of 2024. This is one of many aircraft of the 139th Airlift Wing (139 AW) of the Missouri Air National Guard at Rosecrans.

There is a phenomenon displayed in this image that I don’t believe I’ve photographed before. Notice the white spiral lines behind the propellers. They are tip vortices formed by the propeller. I found this description of what causes these lines on the web: “The pressure in the core of a vortex (such as that shed at the tip of an operating propeller, rotor, wing or extended flap) is reduced well below ambient pressure. The temperature is also lower than ambient because of the lowered pressure. If the temperature is lowered to the dew point, the water vapor will condense and become visible revealing the vortex core.”

I have seen the tip vortices trailing a jet’s wing tips, but I don’t recall seeing them from the propeller blade tips. I’ve learned it’s a fairly common occurrence. I didn’t notice them the day I was taking this photo, so I was surprised to see it when I viewed the photo on my computer screen.

By the way, I should have been using a slower shutter speed when capturing this image. A slower shutter speed would have given the propellers a bit of a blur, indicating movement. When the movement is frozen, as in this image, it seems odd to our brains and belies the incredible speed in which they rotate. I needed the faster shutter speed to better capture jets at this airshow, but should have had the presence of mind so reduce the shutter speed when shooting aircraft with propellers. (I guess I’ll have to keep my amateur status.)

The Sausage Grinder

Toy, Creepy, Clown, Sausage Grinder

This is a creepy toy I spotted in the famous Pittock Mansion in Portland, Oregon. The mansion is now more of a museum and this was in one of the children’s rooms. The sausage grinder wouldn’t be creepy on its own, but set that clown next to it….yikes!

It’s a little disturbing to think little children probably had fun playing with these toys. It’s just evidence of how perceptions and taste and culture change over time.

Doc’s Nose

Aircraft, B-29, Bomber

This is a close-up of Doc’s nose. Doc is the name painted on the side of this historic aircraft; a vintage Boeing B-29 Superfortress. If you look closely, you can just barely see a painting of Doc, the character the plane is named for from Disney’s animated movie, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

This is an HDR image (three bracketed shots) that helped bring out the darker, interior of the aircraft. I find the intricate glass on the nose and metal frame a very cool design. I also like the way you can see reflections of people and surroundings in the polished stainless steel body of the aircraft. The polished metal surface and unique design elements highlight the historical significance of the airplane.

You can read about the history of this plane and the story of its restoration here: The B-29 Doc Story.

Multiple Streams

Waterfall, Portland, Sunbeams

The South Falls at Silver Falls State Park waterfall cascades over a rocky cliff into a tranquil pool below, surrounded by lush greenery. The sun, filtered through tall trees, did a nice job of illuminating the mist in the air. The state park where you can find this, and a number of other waterfalls, is located outside Portland, Oregon.

The title, Multiple Streams, is a reference to the stream of water flowing off the cliff, the sunlight streaming through the trees and the rocky stream bed in the foreground.

Honorine Jobert Anemone

Honorine Jobert Anemone, White Flower, Flower, Anemone

The Honorine Jobert Anemone is a delicate white flower with orange anthers surrounding a spherical green center (ovule). They bloom in the fall.

This particular patch was incorporated into the landscaping at the Pittock Mansion in Portland, Oregon.  I visited there is October of 2022.

Sandhill in a Farm Field

Sandhill Crane, Crane, Bird

This Sandhill Crane was foraging through a northeast Wisconsin farm field, with its companion. This photo was taken in the fall, when their plumage is mostly gray. In the spring an summer, they appear more brown.

Sandhill cranes became regular inhabitants in our area of rural Wisconsin.  I took this photo while walking along the road near my house. It was common in the fall to have dozens flocking and foraging in the fields around our house. Very shy birds in that setting. They were hard to photograph because they would take to flight if I tried to get close.  I caught these two with a 300mm lens and had to enlarge the digital image quite a bit to be able to see any detail.

Death Warmed Over

Turkey Vulture, Vulture, Buzzard

A turkey vulture is perched and poised, with outstretched wings, to dry in the sun after a dip in a nearby creek at Stockstill Park in Branson, Missouri.

I had just seen a dozen or so of these vultures in and around the rocky creek bed.  My efforts to photograph them near the water didn’t go well due to the distance and the bright sunlight, making them seem more like dark silhouettes.  And, of course, as soon as they spotted me, they flew off.

A little further on our hike I tried to approach the creek from a different direction, where the light might be better.  As I made my way through the woods I came upon this and another vulture, holding their wings wide with their backs to the sun, to dry off from being in the water.  If you look closely, you can see this one is still quite wet.

They held their pose and position long enough for me to get close enough to get a good shot.
