Blushing Blue Violet

Blue, Violet, Wildflower

This is a tiny wild violet.  I found this…and many others…along a northeast Wisconsin woodland trail. I enjoy finding small treasures like this and zooming in to better see the intricate details.

Baby Bandit Alert

Raccoon, Baby, Young

The epitome of “bright eyed and bushy tailed,” this very young raccoon was discovering a new world.  I found this one – with three other siblings – exploring our yard this spring. We never saw any sign of their mama.

Poppin’ Fresh

Poppy, Macro, Close UpThis is the first poppy bloom of our 2023 spring. My wife has a small patch of poppies in a flower bed next to our house. Every year they produce a beautiful, but short-lived display of bright orange blossoms. (It dropped its petals within 3 days.)

The Grand Overview

Mount Jefferson, Pano, View

I was able to capture this spectacular view by being in the right place at the right time. This a view of the Cascade mountain range as the sun was setting (out of view, to the right), looking south from the Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood in Oregon.  The prominent peak in the middle is Mount Jefferson in Linn County. I was able to do a little hiking and sightseeing while in the Portland area for a conference in early October.

This is a massive file because it is about 9 individual photos all joined together to be able to capture the full panorama. It is hard to get the full benefit of this scene without viewing it on a large scale.  You can see a full-screen version of this image (at least as large as your screen will allow) by clicking on the photo.  When you do, a larger version will open in a new browser tab.

Turbulent Time

Kewaunee, Lighthouse, Wind, Waves,

It was a blustery, November afternoon and the wind and waves were kicking up quite a fuss at the Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse.  Kewaunee is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan.

Woodland Stemware

Mushroom, Mushrooms, Tall, Fungus

On a late summer hike through the woodlands of Tippecanoe River State Park in Indiana I spotted these unique mushrooms.  At least I think their mushrooms.  In a search of mushrooms I couldn’t find any that were cupped on long stems. They reminded me of long-stemmed wine glasses.  Maybe some fungus fanatic can help identify them.

Above the Timberline

Mount Hood, Mt Hood, Portland, Oregon, Forest

This is a grand view of Mount Hood taken on an early October afternoon.  According to Wikipedia, “In addition to being Oregon’s highest mountain, it is one of the loftiest mountains in the nation based on its prominence, and it offers the only year-round lift-served skiing in North America.”

I had the opportunity to visit the Portland, OR area and did a little hiking. (Watch for more photos in the future.) This image was captured on a highway we traveled to visit the Timberline Lodge, on Mount Hood. Of course, I took a number of photos of this rock, from a variety of angles.  This is the first one I had a chance to process.  It may be the best.  We’ll see.

Web Wide World

Spider Web, Dark, Web

On a hike through the forest of Tippecanoe River State Park in Indiana, I came across this spider web suspended in mid-air; a little above head height.  The sun was lighting it up and, in very tiny lines, creating a prism effect giving it some interesting color.

I could look at this image for a long time.  I like following the lines of web like a maze, from the center outward.  You have to enlarge this image to get very far.  It was just an interesting glimpse of nature in very fortunate, natural, lighting.

Equine Charm – Malibu

Equine, Horse, Mare, Saddle

Meet Malibu. She is a gentle soul. We encountered her on a hike on the trails of Tippecanoe River State Park in Indiana. There were a number of horses (and their riders) on the trails that day.

Malibu’s owner kindly offered to let our granddaughters sit on Malibu for a few minutes.  The girls were greatly impressed and a little afraid of such a big animal. They were delighted, once in the saddle, sporting wide smiles and happy eyes. It is a memory they won’t forget.  We thank Malibu for her gentle disposition and pretty pose. We thank her owner (unfortunately I didn’t catch her name) for the generous offer and wonderful experience.

I love the unique coloring of this mare.  She is a “horse of a different color.”  I also love her calm and sincere look and the accents on the bridle and breast collar.  Charmingly stylish!

Solitude On Bass Lake

Bass Lake, Sunrise, Dock, Calm, LakeThe lake was smooth as silk just before a September sunrise.  This is a popular lake in northwest Indiana.

Covering over 1,300 surface acres, Bass Lake is the third-largest natural lake in Indiana. This view is from the western shore of the lake.
