Hello Mudder

Frog, Bullfrog, Bull Frog, Green, Mud, Nature, Wildlife
I found this big fella spending the morning hours enjoying the mud at the edge of a Missouri farm pond.

This frog seemed pretty happy and healthy but I learned from a Wikipedia search…  “Frog populations have declined significantly since the 1950s. More than one third of species are considered to be threatened with extinction and over one hundred and twenty are believed to have become extinct since the 1980s. The number of malformations among frogs is on the rise and an emerging fungal disease, chytridiomycosis, has spread around the world.”

Lotus Lovelies

Lotus, Water Lily, Flower, Pond, WildflowersThese floral lovelies were found blooming on the edge of a pond in northwest Missouri.

I first thought these flowers were water-lilies. Then I saw online that the leaves of lotus flowers rise above the water level while water-lily leaves are found floating on the surface of the water. The same holds true for their flowers; lotus flowers bloom above the water and water-lily blooms float on the water.  Clearly, these blooms were well above any water by a couple of feet or more.  Whatever you call them, they are lovely.

When The Morning Comes

Algoma, Lighthouse, Sunrise, Silhouette, Lake Michigan
As it rises, the sun illuminates and colorfully accentuates the clouds and contrails behind the Algoma, Wisconsin lighthouse and pier. Algoma is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan.

This was taken a couple of years ago. This is actually a panorama image – where I joined three separate image together to get a wider, more detailed view.

These are the mornings that make getting up before sunrise and driving to your destination worth the effort.

Mr. Personality

Crayfish, Crawdad, Shellfish, Nature, Water
I found this charming character lurking around the rocks of a waterfall in Marinette County, Wisconsin.

We took a trip to Marinette County a couple of years ago to tour some of the waterfalls in the area. While climbing along the rocks, trying to get a unique angle on the falls, I noticed Mr. Personality.  He was moving in the gentle flow of water over and between some of the rocks I was climbing in. He was pretty good size.

Drawn to The Light

Lighthouse, Kewaunee, WI, Lake Michigan, Monochrome, B&W

The light dances upon the waves of Lake Michigan as it gently leads you to the Kewaunee lighthouse and the powerful sun beyond.

I snapped this image some time ago and finally got around to processing it. I decided to make it a monochrome image, intentionally making it softer is some areas and gritty in others.

I particularly like the cross lines created by the tiny light reflections on the waves; much more so than the lines radiating from the sun. This was taken from shore using a telephoto lens.

Avid Gardener

Monarch, Butterfly, Coneflower, Nature
I found this monarch butterfly carefully tending the coneflowers in a Missouri flowerbed.

I seem to be seeing more monarchs this year. I recently learned the monarch is also called by a variety of other names – milkweed, common tiger, wanderer, and black veined brown.

Lunch Time

Dragonfly, Dragonflies, Insect, Dragon Fly, Macro
The dragonfly may seem like a dainty flying insect, but don’t let that fool you. Dragonflies are fierce predators. As you can see, this dragonfly is munching on a yellow bug he captured for lunch.

I found and photographed this dragonfly during an outing to pick blackberries in the middle of a Missouri prairie. Actually, I wasn’t picking, I was taking photos while the others picked.

I am always intrigued by the detail found in the transparent wings of dragonflies. If you want to get a better look of the detail, and of the bug being consumed, click on the photo and a larger version will open in a new browser tab.

The Stars In Her Eyes

Flag, American Flag, Child, Patriot, Young, Patriotism
A Happy Independence Day to you!

This is one of our grandchildren who was examining a small flag of the United States of America. This image was captured last year when we had the opportunity to visit our son and his family in Ohio. We brought flags for each of the youngsters with us. They had a blast running around with them, waving them wildly. I made a mental note to remember this shot when the 4th of July rolled around.

Organic Skyscrapers

Flowers, Lupine, Lupines, Garden, Colorful
This is a gorgeous stand of Lupines blooming in a flowerbed in front of a home in the small town of Kewaunee, Wisconsin.

These flowers caught my eye one day as I drove by the home where they reside. I made note of them and determined to come back sometime. A day or two later, I was in Kewaunee to photograph the sunrise. After I’d gotten all the sunrise I wanted, I remembered the lupines. It was still early without much natural light because the surrounding trees were blocking any effects of the recent sunrise. To minimize any blur due to the low shutter speed required by the low light conditions (1/10 sec), I set my camera on a tripod to capture this shot.

You can see more of the colorful detail in this shot by viewing the full-screen version. To do so, simply click on the photo.

30 Second Sunrise – Kewaunee, WI – 06-09-18

One morning, when I was at the beach in Kewaunee, Wisconsin to photograph the sunrise, I set a small video camera on the hill of the park and let it record the sunrise.  This is the result.  The camera doesn’t provide the highest quality but I think it is still interesting.

The most impressive part of this video is the gradual transformation of the sky; the changing colors and moving clouds.  The most interesting part of this video are the little dots that move from left to right. They are the fishing boats leaving the Kewaunee harbor in the early morning hours. If you watch closely, you can also see two fishermen walking along the pier to fish at the end, near the lighthouse.
