Eyes of Wonder

Baby, Baby Portrait, Child Blue Eyes, Pretty
That look of innocence and wide-eyed wonder is priceless.  On a recent visit, I made sure to get on the floor with our granddaughter and my camera.

The camera is a proven baby attractant; an immediate point of interest for the short-lived attention span of youngsters.  The challenge is to move close enough to fill the frame with your subject and still keep out of reach. I usually spend a lot of time scooting backward and snapping a lot of photos in hopes of snagging one or two good shots.  This is one of my favorites.

Asiatic Dayflower

Asiatic Dayflower, Wildflower, flower, Blue, Tiny
I found this tiny, delicate Asiatic Dayflower on a woodland trail in Missouri. Though small, the bright blue color makes them easy to spot. When you do find them, take a moment to enjoy them because that particular bloom won’t be around long. The saying, “Here today, gone tomorrow,” applies to the Asiatic Dayflower. Thankfully, other’s will likely take their place throughout the summer.

According to Wikipedia….

The Asiatic Dayflower (commelina communis), is an herbaceous annual plant in the dayflower family. It gets its name because the blooms last for only one day.   It is common in disturbed sites and in moist soil. The flowers emerge from summer through fall and are distinctive with two relatively large blue petals and one very reduced white petal.

Sunbather’s Spot

Turtle, Pond, Log, Sun, Nature
There was one spot on the pond where the sun was shining through the trees…and this turtle was taking full advantage of it.

Normally, at the first sight of people, the turtles in this pond would dive into the water. This one was not leaving his cozy spot. Not until I got quite a bit closer.

Rounding the Curve

Senior Portrait, Chair, Girl, Woman, Portrait, Road, Yellow Line, Casual
My niece is entering into her senior year in high school.  She asked if I would take her senior portrait photos. We got a bunch of good shots. (Actually, too many.  It makes it hard to choose.)  This one is my favorite…or one of my favorites…at least in the top five….

And, for those who may wonder – Yes, I do portrait work…weddings…etc.  As long as I can fit it into my schedule. Contact me if you’d like to talk about it.

Orange Adorned Butterfly

Butterfly, Orange, Macro, Profile, Butterfly Palace, Branson, MO
This little beauty was content to pose for a photo or two.  I don’t know what kind of butterfly it is. It was one of hundreds we walked among at the Butterfly Palace in Branson, MO.  I was able to snap several other unique butterflies there and will share them in the days and weeks to come.  Stay tuned.

Persuasive Blue

Morning Glory, Macro, Blue, Flower, Wildflower, FenceChicken wire serves as a make-shift trellis for a morning glory which has climbed up and through the wire to display its simple beauty.

The morning glory represents “love in vain” for whatever outside circumstances according to the Victorian language of flowers.

Sensory Satisfacton

Monochrome, B&W, Rose, Flower, Flowers, Black, White
Beauty, noun – a combination of qualities that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight.

This rose started out yellow in color.  I thought I’d experiment – removing the color, adding some texture and a touch of mystery. I like the result better than the  color version.

Bluebird Family Brunch

Eastern, Bluebirds, Eastern Bluebird, Eastern Bluebirds, Five, Birds, Juvenile
This is a family of eastern bluebirds. The gal standing tall in the back (on the left) is the mother. The rest are her offspring from 2014 hatch. They’ve come together to share a mid-morning brunch of mealworms in our backyard.

This female brought two broods into the world this season.

Fire Above

Clouds, Sunrise, Sunset, Lighthouse, Kewaunee, WI, Lake Michigan
A unique effect, created by the sun highlighting the bottom of the clouds above the Kewaunee, WI lighthouse and pier. This was just moments before the sun would breach the Lake Michigan horizon.  If you look closely, you can see fishermen on the pier, hoping for a bit of early morning angling action.

I take a lot of sunrise photos from the shore of Lake Michigan.  I live a couple of miles from shore so I’m in the habit of looking to the sky a half hour or so before sunrise.  If the sky shows any promise, and it’s a day when I don’t have to be somewhere else like work or church, I head to the beach.

You never know how it’s going to turn out.  There are days when things look promising but the sky never makes good on that promise.  But, on other days, it can be breathtaking.

I take a lot of sunrise photos because no two sunrises are the same….except those with no clouds at all. It’s the clouds that make a sunrise worth capturing.  When I look to the early morning sky, I’m looking for cloud….usually light wispy ones.  These weren’t wispy, but the effect was well worth the trip.

Beauty in Red

Rose, Red, Flower, Wet, Drops, Water Drops, Dew, Garden
But friendship is the breathing rose, with sweets in every fold.   Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.

Botanists have classified around 400,000 different flowering plant species in the world.  Many are very beautiful but, in any judgement of floral beauty, I believe all must be compared to the rose.

This beauty was not photographed at our home. Nor did I find it a the botanical gardens. This one was photographed one morning at the Yellow Rose Motel in Branson, MO. – which had a variety of roses and other beautiful flowering plants on the grounds but, ironically, I could find no yellow roses.
