Reflection

Lazy Man’s Cove

Sailboat, Dock, Sunrise, Reflection, Lake, Cove, Wisconsin

A lone sailboat rests as the sun rises over Lazy Man’s Cove.

Well, it’s not really called Lazy Man’s Cove.  I just made it up because, with the rickety dock in the foreground, I thought the name fit.

This is actually at the Green Lake Conference Center in Green Lake, Wisconsin.  This is a little protected area of the lake right next to the conference center.  I was up, wandering the grounds with my camera (of course), at sunrise last June.

Dawn Highlights

I know, I know…there’s no shortage of sunrise/sunset photos…or lighthouse photos…or both together (particularly in my collection). And I know there are those who think, after you’ve seen the first dozen or so, they get a bit boring. Not to me! That’s why the sunrise/lighthouse combination is one of my favorite and most sought after photos.

To me, every sunrise is different, every cloud formation is unique. Every one of them has their own mark of beauty and my personal challenge is to capture that beauty to share with others…or just remind myself of the wonder of that particular morning.

On this particular morning, the lower edges of the clouds were highlighted in amazing color as the sun prepared to rise over Lake Michigan and the Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse. The beauty, as you see it here, lasted only a few minutes. I was happy to grab it and offer it to you.

Fishermen by the Lighthouse

You know me. I’m a sucker for a sunrise…with a lighthouse…and a few clouds to add interest. The fishermen on the pier is the cherry on top.

The pier at Kewaunee, Wisconsin is a popular spot with fishermen during the fall salmon run. This was an early morning, the sun rising behind the Kewaunee lighthouse.

Angling in a Fog

A lone fisherman waits in a fog for the first bite. He’s fishing for salmon or trout in the waters of Lake Michigan from the pier in Algoma, Wisconsin.

This was the scene I found last Saturday. I stopped and took a number of photos of this guy…and the lighthouse and flowers and bees and birds…”whatever caught my eye.”

Big Red

This fireworks burst turned the water red.  This was part of the 26th annual Shanty Days celebration in Algoma, Wisconsin – on the western shore of Lake Michigan.

The fireworks are launched from the pier and people line the shore to watch the fun.  As you can see, I was positioned on the beach, at the waters edge.  If you’re familiar with the area, you might recognize the Algoma lighthouse – it’s that little red dot on the far right of the photo, just above the water.

Blooming in Black & White

I love fireworks.  The climbing rockets, bursting into bright, streaming displays of color and light are an irresistible enticement for my photographic efforts.

I decided to try something unusual with this one.  The shape of the bursts reminded me of flowers blooming.  Rather than emphasize the color, I removed all color to accentuate the shape.

I wasn’t sure I’d like it without the color, but the more I look at it, the more it appeals to me.  I really like the firework’s reflection in the water.

Fireworks Abound

Algoma, Wisconsin celebrated their 26th Annual Shanty Days Festival last weekend. Every year, the festival concludes with a fireworks display over the Algoma harbor.

I was on the beach with my camera and this is one of my favorite shots from the evening.  It’s the blue effect coming up from the pier that makes this my favorite.

As I thought about it, I’m not sure if they planned this.  I think it’s possible the blue burst was a rocket that never left the launch pad.  Of course, I could be entirely wrong. Whether it was intended or accidental, it turned out pretty cool.

Lighthouse Companion

Kewaunee, Lighthouse, Full Moon, ReflectionA full moon rising over Lake Michigan was a complimentary, short-term companion to the lighthouse at Kewaunee. Moments after this image was taken, the moon slipped behind some clouds. Kewaunee, Wisconsin is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan.
