Trees, Fall Colors, Autumn, Autumn Leaves

A Wisconsin farm field provides a lush green foreground to a fence row of trees showcasing vibrant autumn colors of red, orange, and yellow. Overcast skies add a dramatic contrast to the vivid hues of the foliage.

Ending On a Calm Note

Sunset, Sky, Pano, Panorama

This is a panoramic view of an impressive, January sunset in rural Kewaunee County, Wisconsin home.  This photo was taken at the end of January in 2013.

This photo is much larger and wider than you see here.  I’ve had to crop it to make it fit the format of this web page.  However, if you click on the photo, you will get a view of the full image – at least as much as your screen can handle.

A Blessing

Rainbow, Farm House, Rural, PanoA rainbow arches over our rural, northeast Wisconsin home.

I happened to notice this rainbow at the very end of the day…just as the sun was setting. In truth, I was a little late to the party. A few minutes earlier and it would have been a full, arching beauty.

This is a panoramic image that required four images (stitched together) to capture the full view you see here.

Yellow In Season

Sunflowers, Flowers, Yellow
A sight for sore eyes. These sunflowers will brighten up anyone’s day. These were found blooming in a farm field in northeast Wisconsin.

This is actually a field of sunflowers that surrounds our rural home. Simply breathtaking when if full bloom.  Watch for more photos to come.

Color Me Country

Rainbow, Rural, House, Kewaunee, WI
It doesn’t happen often, but when a rainbow appears it’s so much better when I can capture it.

On this occasion, I was mowing the lawn when it started to rain.  I turned my mower toward the garage and noticed the rainbow forming.  I parked the mower and dashed into the house for my camera and an umbrella.  I had just enough time to snap a few photos before it dissipated.

This is actually a panoramic image.  I stitched four, portrait oriented images together to capture what you see here.  My camera and lens could not capture a wide enough view to fit all of the rainbow in one shot. I may have been able to capture all of it with a different lens, but I didn’t want to take the time to change lenses and maybe miss the shot.

Spring Coming On

Tree, Sky, Farm Field, Rural, Blue, Green
The trees are starting to sprout leaves and the crops are sporting their spring-time green in this scenic view of rural northeast Wisconsin.

A couple of days ago I was grilling steaks in my driveway.  I noticed the cool clouds filling the sky as the sun was slipping toward the horizon.  I ran inside to grab my camera, flipped the steaks on the grill and hurried across the road to an adjacent farm field.  I positioned myself to capture the sun behind a tree, standing in a field of oats.  After snapping a couple of frames, I had to hurry back to those marvelous steaks on the grill.

If you look through my collection, you will find a number images featuring this same tree and the sunset. (The Wild BlueSerene SunsetRural Sunset – to name a few)

Front Porch Portrait

Portrait, Senior Portrait, Rural, Porch
Occasionally I have the opportunity to photograph people. This is a favorite capture from a high school senior portrait shoot.

Portrait photography is challenging.  Since I don’t do a lot of portrait work, it challenges me to think outside of my normal landscape/nature photography box.  Sure, much of the technical and creative aspects are the same, but putting a person in the frame, as the focus of the image, requires a different thought process.

I would focus more on people in my photos if it weren’t for my greatest challenge in portrait work – scheduling. (Remember, photography isn’t my full-time employment.) I can take photos of sunrises or flowers or bugs whenever I have a spare moment.  I just grab my camera bag and go find something pretty or interesting.  To do a portrait shoot, requires planning and cooperation with others – date, time, location, weather, etc..

Strolling Through the Weeds

Boy, B&W, Monochrome, Portrait, Child,
A young boy, with a contemplative look, strolls through the tall grasses and weeds of an rural farm field.

I don’t often get to shoot photos of people, but when I do, it tends to be close friends or family. I just don’t have the time in my schedule to set up portrait sessions and the work of post processing. In this case, I got to spend some time with this three -year-old cutie – my grandson.  Just the two of us took a little walk in the country…with my camera, of course.

I wasn’t really intending to grab a shot of him.  We were just out for a stroll while Papa (what he calls me) looked for interesting things to photograph. We looked for birds and pretty leaves, talked about, walked over a dry creek bed. The perfect subject eluded us.

It was a tough time to shoot – mid day, under a bright sun.  I didn’t find much that caught my eye. So, naturally, on the walk back I turned the camera on the most interesting thing I could find.

Because of the overpowering contrast created by that bright sun, I thought the best treatment for this shot was to convert it to a monochrome image. I think it turned out well. In fact, one of my all time favorites. (Of course, that’s from the Grandpa in me as much as the artist.)

Sun Worshipers

Sunrise, Daisy, Daisies, Sky, Clouds, Rural, HDR
A patch of wild daises await the sunrise on a rural Wisconsin morning.  This was the scene I captured a few days ago where our lawn meets the farm field that surrounds our property.

Summer Skylight

Sunset, Sunrise, Rural, Sky, Clouds, Reflection
A few evenings ago, the sunset lit up the rural Wisconsin sky with an awesome display of color. Naturally, I stepped out into the yard to record the beauty.

We’ve had a wetter than normal fall this year, keeping the lawns green and, in our case, sloppy wet.  The large puddle in our yard (remaining effects of a recent rain) reflected the early evening beauty.
