Shanty Days
Rain of Fire
An impressive burst of cascading color from the annual Shanty Days festival at Algoma, WI. The fireworks display is a crowd favorite that closes out the summer, weekend celebration.

Flash of Brilliance
Life of the Party
This fireworks burst certainly provided a festive atmosphere. It was part of the fireworks show that is the traditional finale of the Shanty Days celebration in Algoma, WI.
This year’s event was added fun because I was joined by a other photographers, sharing tips and techniques. All came away with some great shots.

Pick A Color
Algoma’s annual Shanty Days celebration wraps up with a fireworks show on Sunday night. I was there, on the beach, near the water’s edge with my camera to catch the colors in sky and on the water.
Those familiar with the Algoma harbor will recognize the red light on the lower right of the photo as the lighthouse at the end of the pier.

Big Red
This fireworks burst turned the water red. This was part of the 26th annual Shanty Days celebration in Algoma, Wisconsin – on the western shore of Lake Michigan.
The fireworks are launched from the pier and people line the shore to watch the fun. As you can see, I was positioned on the beach, at the waters edge. If you’re familiar with the area, you might recognize the Algoma lighthouse – it’s that little red dot on the far right of the photo, just above the water.

Blooming in Black & White
I love fireworks. The climbing rockets, bursting into bright, streaming displays of color and light are an irresistible enticement for my photographic efforts.
I decided to try something unusual with this one. The shape of the bursts reminded me of flowers blooming. Rather than emphasize the color, I removed all color to accentuate the shape.
I wasn’t sure I’d like it without the color, but the more I look at it, the more it appeals to me. I really like the firework’s reflection in the water.

Fireworks Abound
Algoma, Wisconsin celebrated their 26th Annual Shanty Days Festival last weekend. Every year, the festival concludes with a fireworks display over the Algoma harbor.
I was on the beach with my camera and this is one of my favorite shots from the evening. It’s the blue effect coming up from the pier that makes this my favorite.
As I thought about it, I’m not sure if they planned this. I think it’s possible the blue burst was a rocket that never left the launch pad. Of course, I could be entirely wrong. Whether it was intended or accidental, it turned out pretty cool.

Strange Fire
This is one of the most unusual fireworks effects I’ve photographed. It was an arch of white light that sparkled for several seconds and then finished with a bright flash (the orange-ish ball above it) and loud boom. Almost as impressive is the reflection that it created on the lake and the wet beach between the effect and my camera.
This is the last of the fireworks photos I’ll post from Algoma’s Shanty Days festival. You can look over all my fireworks photos from this year by selecting the “Fireworks” Category in the left margin of this site or clicking HERE. There are 11 different images in the collection.

Spider in the Sky
The first thing that popped into my mind when I saw this image was, “That looks like a green spider on its web!” This might be my favorite photo of Algoma’s Shanty Days fireworks show.
As long as I’m using a bit of imagination, the two white star bursts remind me of flies caught in the web.
Of course, I didn’t and couldn’t have planed it. I just accidentally captured it. Right place + fluke timing = pleasant surprise!
Well…am I right? Do you think it looks like a spider and web? Is this cool or what?
Bonus Photo: another multiple burst, Shanty Days fireworks image.

The Big Bang
This was the “big one” at Algoma’s Shanty Days fireworks show. The massive spread of this effect took me by surprise. As you can see, it dominated the sky and pushed beyond the view of my camera. I widened my camera’s framing after this shot, but never saw another one quite this big.
If you look back through the posts of the last couple of days you can gain some idea of how much larger it was compared to the normal. As you look at the other Shanty Days fireworks photos, compare the position of the Algoma pier light (that little red dot in the lower half of the photo, near the right edge). You can see, the others don’t go beyond the pier light.
