Larger Light Looming

Full Moon, Fresnel Lamp, Fresnel Lens, Kewaunee, WI, Wisconsin,

As powerful as the Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse lamp may be, it is no match for the power and majesty of the full moon of March 27, 2013.

I was pleasantly surprised at how well this image turned out; at how clearly the Fresnel lens of the lighthouse can be seen.  The surprising part…this photo was taken from the shore.  Anyone familiar with the Kewaunee lighthouse knows the lighthouse sits at the end of a very long pier that extends 750 feet from shore.

To get this image I used a 300mm lens with a 2X teleconverter (effectively doubling the reach of the lens).  It is simply luck that the focus was as sharp as it is since I had to focus manually. (A number of other shots that night were not so sharp.)  Under low light conditions, particularly with the teleconverter, the camera’s auto-focus doesn’t work.

Normally, without the brightness of the full moon behind it, the lighthouse lamp would show up as a big, bright white blob.

Solitude on Ice

lighthouse, fog, Ice, Algoma, Wisconsin, WI, Monochrome, B&W, Black and White, Mist, Lake Michigan

The morning was cold.  The sun was rising…and so was a mist from the patches of open water near the lighthouse that stands at the Alogma, Wisconsin harbor.

I posted a color image from this same morning a week ago – Frigid Sunrise Fog.

Kewaunee Pier Silhouette

Fishermen gathering on the pier at Kewaunee, Wisconsin is a common scene each fall.  This was an early morning shot, just after sunrise.  The sun is rising above Lake Michigan, directly behind the lighthouse.  This shot was taken from the beach.

Sunrise Pier Fishermen

The Kewaunee Lighthouse is situated at the end of a very long pier that stretches out into Lake Michigan.  It is a very popular spot for fishermen. Behind these group of early morning anglers, the powerful sun begins its ascent.

If you look closely, you’ll notice a small boat in the very bottom right corner.

Bright sunlight, muted by an early morning fog, created a nice silhouette effect on a stand of Queen Anne’s Lace.  If you look closely, you can see strands of spider web stretched between the flower stems.

This image may seem familiar. It’s a cropped version of the photo I posted on August 2nd, entitled Queen’s Morning.

Queen’s Morning

Silhouette, Sunrise, Sunset. Wildflowers
Yesterday morning started with a light blanket of fog.  As the sun pushed it’s way up through the foggy horizon, it created a nice silhouette of some Queen Anne’s Lace that grows at the edge of the field of oats that is next to lawn of our country home.

I was on the beach at Kewaunee, Wisconsin, taking photos of the lighthouse at sunrise. (Watch for that photo to be posted soon.)

I noticed the sun beginning to rise over the pier and started to take photos of it. Then I noticed two people walking along the pier, toward the sun, one from each direction. The two met and began talking.  I moved my camera to frame the two in the orb of light from the rising sun behind them.

The two were fisherman – you can see one with a landing net and rod in his hands.  I imagine they were discussing the recent fishing activity on the pier, like if any had been caught this morning, what they were biting on, how big they were…etc.

Wisps of Light

Lighthouse, Kewaunee, SunriseI’ve taken a lot of photos of the Kewaunee lighthouse, but none like this.  This was a pre-sunrise shot focusing on the light of the lighthouse.  The morning sky provided a dramatic background.

I have another, similar shot where the lighthouse isn’t all shadow.  I’ll post it in a couple of days.

To get a better view of the lens on that light, click the photo.  Feel free to share with friends.
