Salmon Hunters

Sunrise, Lighthouse, Algoma, HarborThis is a fall sunrise at Algoma, Wisconsin. Fisherman line the piers in hopes of catching the salmon that make their way from Lake Michigan into the harbor and up the Ahnapee River to spawn.

This particular morning, low level fog covered the lake just beyond the piers. You can’t see them, but there were fishing boats trolling just outside of the harbor opening.

Fire & Ice Sunrise

Algoma, Lighthouse, Ice, Winter, Frozen, SunriseI just realized that I had never posted one of my all time favorite and best selling images on this photo blog.  It’s been around so long and many have seen it, but it never made it to this site.

This is the very first, high-quality photo I took that made me think maybe I could be a decent photographer.  This was taken in late December of 2006, using my old Kodak Easyshare DX7590.

The image, of course, is the lighthouse at Algoma, Wisconsin, just before sunrise.

Full Moon of Mystery

This was supposed to be the Perigree Moon of 2012.  For all my efforts, I was unable to capture it full and unhindered.

On this particular evening, I went to the shore in Kewaunee, WI. I was hoping to catch a nice view of the moon rising near the Kewaunee lighthouse. As you can see from the photo to the right, thick clouds kept that from becoming a reality.

The large image above is the best shot I was able to get after the moon had moved up in the sky – still shrouded by the clouds.  It’s not what I was going for, but I kind of like the mysterious look of it.

For some reason, this photo actually reminds me of another photo of mine which, ironically, is an image of the sun:  Sailing Past the Sun

Spring Enchantment

The sunset and high clouds created a magical moment of enchanting color.

This was taken last Saturday in the farm field across the road from our rural Kewaunee, WI home.  I have taken many photos of this tree because it offers some interest and perspective to the beautiful sunsets we can experience.  I often wish there was an old barn or a little white chapel between me an the sunset.  Until something else pops up, the tree will have to do.

Night Vision

Full Moon, Kewaunee, Lighthouse, Pier, Lake MichiganA week ago the moon was full, temperatures were freezing and I was standing in the dark along Lake Michigan’s shore in Kewaunee, WI.  I’ve never attempted to shoot the Kewaunee pier and lighthouse from this angle before.  I’ll have to try it in the daylight, possibly for a sunrise, sometime.

I worked a bit to try and correct the color of this image.  Unfortunately, the mercury vapor lights of the city give everything a reddish tint that I wasn’t able to tone down much without making the rest of the colors look strange.

Beacons of the Night

Full Moon, Night, Lighthouse, RefelctionThe rising, full moon and the Kewaunee, WI lighthouse were competing for equal billing last night.

I did a little experimenting with HDR techniques.  I like the different colors created in the reflections by the orange-ish moon and the yellowish light.

Pre-Sunrise Pastels

Algoma, Lighthouse, Purple, Clouds
The unpredictably of the sky is what makes sunrise and sunset photography so enjoyable and challenging for me.  You never know what you’re going to see…or miss if you’re not there.  Another consideration is how rapidly the conditions can change.  Sometimes, an usual color or effect will fill the sky and only last a moment before fading.   This is a good example.  For just a moment the sky, behind the clouds, turned pink.  I wanted to get more shots of this effect, but it was gone as quickly as it appeared.

Keep in mind, this was before sunrise and the low light conditions created a lot of digital “noise” on this image.  Sorry about that. I didn’t have time to fiddle with camera settings.
