Otherworldly

Badlands, Wide-Angle, Sky

This is a wide-angle view of the unique landscape found at Badlands National Park in South Dakota, USA.

I took a different approach to this image.  Using a fisheye, wide-angle lens, I was able to squeeze a lot of geography into the frame.  Normally to see this view, you would have a much wider image.  (Compare my previous post of a similar landscape.) This particular lens also adds a curvature to the horizon.

Chill In the Air

Algoma, Lighthouse, Winter, Sunrise

I recently upgraded my computer and while transferring files, I discovered a number of images worthy of revisiting.  (Actually, there’s a lot I’ve just not gotten around to processing.)

My typical photo outing is to go take a number of photos, download them to the computer, find my favorite, process it and post it.  That leaves a lot of photos taken on the same day untouched.  Many of them are worthy of posting, but I rarely get to it.  This is one of those images dating back to February 17, 2013.  Back then I selected and posted “Frigid Sunrise Fog” as my favorite shot.

Dignity – of Earth and Sky

Statue, Sculpture

On our way to the Badlands we found Dignity.  This is a 50-foot stainless steel sculpture to honor the cultures of the Lakota and Dakota people.

The full title of the sculpture is “Dignity: of Earth and Sky.”  You can find Dignity on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River near Chamberlain, South Dakota at a rest area off of Interstate 90.  You can read more of the interesting facts and story behind this beautiful work of art by reading an article i found on Wikipedia.

Big Harry Fireworks Display

Fireworks, Harbor, Kewaunee, Tug Boat

This is an unusual fireworks capture from the Fireworks display on July 3rd in Kewaunee, WI.  This is one of my favorite perspectives of the Kewaunee show – from the west end of the harbor.

There’s a lot I like about this image.  The fireworks burst is has an unusual color and flow.  I love the reflections on the harbor. If you look closely, you will see a few tiny white dots. They are stars in the night sky. And, of course, the Tug Ludington all lit up in the foreground. Also note the bluish dot above the water near the middle of the photo. That is the light from the Kewaunee lighthouse.

The Grand Overview

Mount Jefferson, Pano, View

I was able to capture this spectacular view by being in the right place at the right time. This a view of the Cascade mountain range as the sun was setting (out of view, to the right), looking south from the Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood in Oregon.  The prominent peak in the middle is Mount Jefferson in Linn County. I was able to do a little hiking and sightseeing while in the Portland area for a conference in early October.

This is a massive file because it is about 9 individual photos all joined together to be able to capture the full panorama. It is hard to get the full benefit of this scene without viewing it on a large scale.  You can see a full-screen version of this image (at least as large as your screen will allow) by clicking on the photo.  When you do, a larger version will open in a new browser tab.

Turbulent Time

Kewaunee, Lighthouse, Wind, Waves,

It was a blustery, November afternoon and the wind and waves were kicking up quite a fuss at the Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse.  Kewaunee is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan.

Solitude On Bass Lake

Bass Lake, Sunrise, Dock, Calm, LakeThe lake was smooth as silk just before a September sunrise.  This is a popular lake in northwest Indiana.

Covering over 1,300 surface acres, Bass Lake is the third-largest natural lake in Indiana. This view is from the western shore of the lake.

Fireworks Over Manistique

Fireworks, Manistique, MI, Night

The fireworks were fabulous over Manistique, Michigan as they celebrated the 4th of July weekend. (07/03/22). Manistique is a small town on the shores of Lake Michigan in the Upper Peninsula of the state of Michigan.

This photo was actually taken by my wife, Sara.  I set the camera up and gave her the remote shutter button.  She wasn’t quite sure what she was doing, since this was her first time. I think she did a great job…with the help of a great teacher.

Kewaunee Sparkles

Kewaunee, Fireworks, Night, Tug

Fireworks light up the night sky over the Kewaunee, WI harbor.  The Tug Ludington, a tourist attraction and permanent resident of the harbor, was a quiet observer.

One of my photographic joys is capturing fireworks. Kewaunee is a couple of miles from my home, so I try to make their annual display.  I’ve photographed their fireworks from a number of locations over the years but this spot, at the edge of the harbor is one of my favorites.  I love the reflection from the calm water. The tug adds a nice point of interest.

Lakeland Desert

Lighthouse, Kewaunee, Lake Michigan, Sunrise

The calm water, thin clouds and intense sun reminded me of a lone building stranded in the middle of a desert wasteland.

This sunrise appeared behind the Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse and pier on the western shore of Lake Michigan. This image was captured in May of 2020.
