Sunlight

Sweet Burro Babe

Image of a young burro resting on the ground. This sweet little burro, with its long ears and docile demeanor, was relaxing in a partially shaded part of Custer State Park in South Dakota. It’s mother and others from the clan were close by – just outside the photo’s frame.

The burros at Custer State Park are a favorite attraction. They are generally friendly and happy to be petted and fed carrots and apples by park visitors. Last summer they had a number of burro births. This is one from the 2025 crop.

Relaxed Demeanor

Burrow, Donkey, Animal

A friendly burro was happy to greet visitors to Custer State Park in South Dakota. This is one of a dozen or more – in a variety of colors and sizes – that strolled by to say, “Hi!”

When we visit Custer State Park, we have to spend time with the burrows.  They roam free through the park and are quite docile and happy to help you dispose of any excess apples and carrots.

Roots of Modern Dance

Roots, Tree, Woodland, Custer State Park

A fallen tree with it’s gnarled, weathered, roots exposed makes an interesting but strange natural sculpture that contrasts with the peaceful, green forest setting.

This was found in Custer State Park in South Dakota.  It’s one of those things that just caught my eye.

Multiple Streams

Waterfall, Portland, Sunbeams

The South Falls at Silver Falls State Park waterfall cascades over a rocky cliff into a tranquil pool below, surrounded by lush greenery. The sun, filtered through tall trees, did a nice job of illuminating the mist in the air. The state park where you can find this, and a number of other waterfalls, is located outside Portland, Oregon.

The title, Multiple Streams, is a reference to the stream of water flowing off the cliff, the sunlight streaming through the trees and the rocky stream bed in the foreground.

Death Warmed Over

Turkey Vulture, Vulture, Buzzard

A turkey vulture is perched and poised, with outstretched wings, to dry in the sun after a dip in a nearby creek at Stockstill Park in Branson, Missouri.

I had just seen a dozen or so of these vultures in and around the rocky creek bed.  My efforts to photograph them near the water didn’t go well due to the distance and the bright sunlight, making them seem more like dark silhouettes.  And, of course, as soon as they spotted me, they flew off.

A little further on our hike I tried to approach the creek from a different direction, where the light might be better.  As I made my way through the woods I came upon this and another vulture, holding their wings wide with their backs to the sun, to dry off from being in the water.  If you look closely, you can see this one is still quite wet.

They held their pose and position long enough for me to get close enough to get a good shot.

Sumac in the Sun

Wild Sumac, Staghorn Sumac, Autum Colors, Fall Colors, Orange, Red, Green

It’s autumn in Wisconsin and the leaves have turned brilliant colors. In this area, one of the most transformations is the wild sumac plant – turning from green to orange and then a deep red.

This is the tip of a wild sumac branch being illuminated by the morning sun. The photo doesn’t do it justice.
