Sandhill in a Farm Field
This Sandhill Crane was foraging through a northeast Wisconsin farm field, with its companion. This photo was taken in the fall, when their plumage is mostly gray. In the spring an summer, they appear more brown.
Sandhill cranes became regular inhabitants in our area of rural Wisconsin. I took this photo while walking along the road near my house. It was common in the fall to have dozens flocking and foraging in the fields around our house. Very shy birds in that setting. They were hard to photograph because they would take to flight if I tried to get close. I caught these two with a 300mm lens and had to enlarge the digital image quite a bit to be able to see any detail.

South Falls at Silver Falls State Park
Last year I visited the Portland, Oregon area for a conference. While there I got to visit some of the area’s scenic treasures. Silver Falls State Park is a site with ten waterfalls within rainforest-like conditions. This is South Falls – a 177-foot (54 m) cascade. It is one of the most visited of the falls, probably because it is near a main entrance.
If you look closely, you can see a wooden fence about half way up. That is a trail that leads you under the falls. There is a lot of great hiking and beauty in this park. This is a panoramic photo – three individual photos joined together (vertically) to get the full, awesome view.

Tall Drink of Comfort
The sky above, the water below and the sun rising over its shoulder all combine to make a warm, comforting atmosphere around the Kewaunee, WI lighthouse. This image was captured on the western shore of Lake Michigan, just south of the pier in Kewaunee.
This is a panoramic image. Usually we think of panoramas as being wide, horizontal images. In this case, I wanted more of the sky and water in the shot than a single frame would allow, so I combined three frames (high, middle and low) to create a tall image. The changing hue in the upper sky adds to the interest of this image, as does the sun’s reflection dancing along the ripples of the lake.
As I’ve said before, I don’t normally post many panoramas because they don’t display well within the size constraints of most webpages. This one would be truly awesome if you could view it very large. It is a large file and could be printed as tall as eight feet. Wouldn’t that would be cool!
