Sunny Day Done
As the sun sets over a farm field in rural Wisconsin, the sunflowers seem reluctant to call it a day.
We are blessed to have sunflowers growing in the field across the road from our yard. Yesterday the sunset was beautiful and I thought the combination of flowers and sky would make a great image.
I tried a new technique to create this panoramic image. The sky is so much brighter than the field, so I tried to a different exposure for the one shot of the field and a darker exposure for the three shots that make up the sky and then combined the four different frames into this panorama. There are some areas of the image that I’m not pleased with, but overall, I think it’s a winner. I’ll need to work on refining the process to clean up some of the rough spots.

Praisin’ In The Grass
It was a calm morning on Lake Michigan just before the sunrise. This view of the Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse and pier was viewed among the beach grass on shore.
This turned out to be a good morning to catch the sunrise. (06/19/18) I decided to grab this shot, a few feet away from the shore line, for a different perspective. It was still pretty dark when this image was captured. You’ll notice, the lighthouse light is still on. My shutter speed was set at 1/4 sec. It was a very calm morning.

Daffodil Doppelgänger

noun. 1. a ghostly duplicate of a living person. from German Doppelgänger, literally: double-goer.
These daffodils, growing together, seemed to be mirror images of each other’s springtime beauty.
I found these daffodils growing among a group of blooms in a park not far from our home on a morning in the spring of 2017.

Fall from Grace
On a recent hike through the woods – on the hunt for some autumn colors – I stumbled upon this colorful leaf resting on a branch and a log covered with a carpet of green moss.
The color combination and variety of textures caught my eye. There wasn’t much that caught my eye on this outing. The woods were not very vibrant. I was expecting to see a lot more color. I’m not sure our fall colors are going to be as brilliant as in the past few years. There’s still some time. We’ll see.

Full Body Tattoo
I found this uniquely decorated spider hanging around in my wife’s flower bed. In our part of the world we call these large arachnids, yellow garden spiders. This spider falls under the Argiope Aurantia classification.
The markings on it’s abdomen remind me of a tattoo. I think it looks like a tattoo of some space alien.
Because of this spider’s size, it looks menacing but the Argiope genus are harmless to humans. Like most garden spiders, they eat insects, and they are capable of consuming prey up to twice their size. The etymology of Argiope is from a Greek name meaning “silver-faced”.
Because of the very sparse web this one is hanging on, I’m guessing it is a male since the females tend to have a large, more complicated web with a prominent zig-zag pattern in the center. (Here’s an example from my collection – Found On the Web.)

Wild Pair
This pair of wildflowers caught my eye on a hike through the trails of Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve, in Brown County, Wisconsin.
The light filtering through the trees seemed to accentuate these particular blooms. And, as I’ve said many times before…in photography, it’s all about the light.
This was my first outing with a new lens. (Actually, a used lens, but new to me.) It was an inexpensive acquisition and I think it did an acceptable job.

Predator
This bee was persistent in his attack of this dandelion. My getting close didn’t seem to dissuade it. As I approached, it would leave the flower, hovering a few inches above, and then settle back down for the work. That made it easy for me to get a good shot. The tiny butterflies I was trying to capture were considerably more shy. They vacated the blooms anytime I got within range.
This scene was captured on my own front lawn. I titled this one, “Predator,” because I think the bees face makes an ominous impression. I know I wouldn’t want to meet one in a dark alley.

Peaceful Opposition
As evening began to plot its takeover of the landscape, this field of sunflowers stood in peaceful opposition to the impending nightfall.
Every now and then I go a little overboard with the post processing. When I snapped this image of sunflowers growing in a field near our home, it was late afternoon and the sun was setting behind the flowers. That put the face of the flowers in the shadows. With the use of fill flash, I was able to counteract the back-lighting but it gave the scene a strange, surreal feel. With the unusual lighting, there was no way to get a natural look, so I slipped down the other slope.
My wife thinks the two prominent blooms need a yellow, curved line under them to give the image a smile. I can see that.

Wildflowers of Yellow
A delightful collection of flowers blooming wild and free in Northeast Wisconsin.
These wildflowers were spotted along a trail at the Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve, in Brown County. It was a beautiful day for a walk and a terrible day for misquotes. On this particular hike, every time we stopped we paid a price in insect attacks. Of course we survived, but we had to keep up a pretty good pace, continually swatting at the air and our arms. Might have missed a few shots in our hurried state.

Rehabilitation Rising
The Kewaunee, WI lighthouse has a different look lately. It is undergoing renovation, as evidenced by the scaffolding surrounding the structure.
This was a photo taken just after sunrise from the beach at Selner Park, on the western shore of Lake Michigan. I’d heard they were sprucing up the lighthouse and decided I needed to get a photo while the work was in progress.
If you look closely, you can see a small fishing boat leaving the harbor, just visible off the end of the pier, where the sun is reflecting on the water.
