Air Show Wall of Fire
The “wall of fire” provided a dramatic backdrop to the Thunderbird’s F-16C Fighting Falcons at the Sound of Speed Airshow at Rosecrans Memorial Airport in St. Joseph, MO.
Tora, Tora, Tora – a reenactment of the bombing of Pearl Harbor – uses pyrotechnics to simulate the dropping of bombs from vintage warbirds and the wall of fire is their finale.
The Unite States Air Force air demonstration squadron Thunderbird jets are parked on the tarmac awaiting their part in the airshow. Notice the Thunderbird’s crew member who is kneeling to take a photo of this cool (or should I say, HOT!) moment.

Suspicious Looking Character
On a platform overlooking the Missouri River at Indian Cave State Park in southeast Nebraska I spotted this strange, long-legged, fuzzy fly sitting on the weathered railing. It reacted to our presence but didn’t fly away – not at first. That gave me time to zoom in and snap a few images.

Patriots Tunnel Vision
As cars drive through the Doane Robinson Tunnel in Custer State Park in South Dakota they get a perfectly framed view of the Mount Rushmore monument.
The scenic roadway through Custer State Park were carefully planned and tunnels dug to frame the monument. Very cool to see.

Reflecting On the Mighty Mo
This is a pleasant, peaceful view of the Missouri River – standing on the Nebraska shore, viewing the Missouri shore. The cloud reflections in the water are what inspired me to take this shot. The tan areas in the foreground are where sunlight is filtering through the trees above, revealing the true color of the water.
We took a little trip to Indian Cave State Park. It’s located in the southeastern part of Nebraska, near Shubert. This photo was taken at the parking area of the Indian Cave.
This is not the greatest image, technically. I took this image with a wide, fisheye, lens – too get as much in the shot as I could. I also took three bracketed shots, hand-held, which gave me the ability to even out the bright sky and clouds with the dark, shaded foreground. However, by not having the camera on a firm tripod, this image is not as sharp as I would like.

Blue Skies and Towering Heights
Devil’s Tower Monument in Wyoming is an impressive, towering rock formation. It is quite majestic against a backdrop of blue sky and scattered clouds. Pine trees and rocky terrain provide a contrast to the vertical columns of this geological marvel.
On our trip to South Dakota, we slipped across the border to visit this popular attraction. The tower has a trail that encircles it and this is one of the views from that trail.

Rascal Duo
Two very young raccoons seem to be taking break on a green lawn during a sunny afternoon.
I was able to get a good batch of photos of these little rascals when they showed up – with no mother – on the front lawn or our rural Wisconsin home. Just search for “raccoon” with the search bar in the upper left is you’d like to see more of them.

Fishing by the Light
The Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse stands at the end of a long pier – a spot often occupied by fishermen. If you look closely, you will see their silhouettes. (Click on the photo to see an enlarged version.)

Amazing Technicolor Web
A detailed spider web glistens in the sunlight. The delicate strands of web, highlighted by the sun, reveal a stunningly beautiful, technicolor design.
On a recent hike through the woods at Weston State Park in northwest Missouri, I spotted this spider web, highlighted by a beam of light. To fully grasp the impact of this image, you must click on it to view the larger version on a big screen. (Or zoom in a lot.) The yellowish-green spider is
I did not adjust the color or saturation for this web. I merely reduced the highlights, pulled up the shadows and whites a bit and toned down the luminance on the green leaves.

Crape Myrtle in Bloom
This vibrant cluster of pink flowers with a few green buds is from a blooming Crape Myrtle Tree. I was captivated by these flowering trees on a recent trip to Alabama. It was easy to spot these bright red flowers as I drove from the panhandle of Florida to the southwest corner of Alabama. They seemed abundant along my route. When I finally got to my destination, one of the first questions I asked was, “What are those red, flowering trees?”
I took a few photos and did a little research when I got back home in northwest Missouri. Crape Myrtles have been lovingly referred to as the Lilac of the South (even though they have no fragrance). They have a very long bloom time in the summer. I think the little yellow flowers that bloom out of the green orbs is pretty unique too.
Crape myrtles have an interesting exfoliating bark from late spring to early summer that, as it peels, reveals a beautiful, velvety, cinnamon colored trunk. (Click on the photo to the right and get a good look.) I’ve learned the leaves also provide some fall color – from yellow to orange to red – if the weather cooperates.

Loving the Light
The Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse and pier is dwarfed by the big, beautiful, dramatic sky at sunrise. The calm water reflects the colorful twilight hues of the clouds.
I just happened to be in Kewaunee last weekend and made it a point to get up way before I needed to for church to capture some sunrise views from the beach. This was actually snapped about 20 minutes before sunrise. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate this sunrise as a 7 or 8. It was good enough to provide a number of good images…which I will be working on in the coming weeks.
