Treetop Convergence
Looking upwards from an Oregon forest floor, the perspective gives this photo a kaleidoscopic feel. The converging lines of the tree trunks create a dramatic vanishing point at the center of the blue sky. This image was captured along the Eagle Creek Trail in the Portland area.
Many of the trees in this area were ravaged by fire a few years before I was there. Many of the tree trunks in this image still bear the blackened scars. I was in the Portland area for a conference in October of 2022.
I took this photo with a fisheye lens and had to take several shots at different exposure levels so I could combine them for an HDR image. Otherwise, the sky would be too bright and the tree trunks would be too dark. I may have over done the HDR since it has a surreal feel.

Baubles of Nature
A vibrant green leaf is adorned with multiple water droplets along its scalloped edges, creating a fresh and dewy appearance. I like the serene feeling the soft background lighting gives this image.
This is an image from one of my slow walks through the woods of northwest Missouri. The colors and simplicity of this image makes it one of my favorites. This was actually taken a few years back. I have plenty of nice shots I just haven’t gotten around to processing.

X-Wing Landed
A dragonfly with intricate wing patterns took a rest on the forest floor. The outstretched wings showcase the beauty and delicacy of its structure.
I was on a slow walk through northwest Missouri woods when this small dragonfly zipped by me. My eyes followed it’s movement until it landed. Then I crept slowly, taking photos as I approached and got remarkably close before it zipped away.
This was a small specimen – the body only about and inch and a half from head to tail. I was so impressed by the banding over the eyes that I included a larger crop for you to enjoy.

Morel Season Opener
This is the very first morel mushroom my wife found this season. If you know my wife, you know she was very excited. She loves mushroom hunting even more than she loves eating them.
This is the first. It is early in the season and so it is also very tiny. The smaller photo is the same mushroom with my wife’s finger beside it to give you a better perspective. 
This was found in the woodlands of northwest Missouri. We did not pick them – or the other two of similar stature found in the same area – because, well, they were just too small to bother. But just seeing them gets our hopes up for an abundant harvest this spring. We’ll see.

Black Hills Buck
This was a nice find on our visit to Custer State Park in South Dakota. We were driving on one of the outer-edge roads of the park and spotted this young, white-tailed buck just off the road. We parked and I pursued him with my camera. It took awhile to catch him still for a moment. One of my favorite shots from the trip.

Slender Sunbather
While hiking a nature trail on the east end of Baird Creek in Green Bay, Wisconsin, I spotted this fellow sunning itself on the side of a small hill in the forest. The area was mostly shaded by the trees, but it found one area of sunlight. I’m not snake expert, but I believe this is a common gartersnake. It may have been two to three feet long. As I got closer with my camera, it quickly slithered away.

Baird Creek Bed
This is a summertime view of Baird Creek – a natural treasure that winds through northeast Green Bay, Wisconsin.
I took this photo while on a recent hike along one of the well-kept nature trails that accompany the creek. It’s a great place to get out into nature while still in the city.

Descent to Vertigo
Going down! These steps are part of the arduous 303 step stairway to a scenic view at Roche-A-Cri State Park near Friendship, Wisconsin. It’s quite a climb to the top but worth the view and a welcome place to rest before beginning the descent.
I took a few photos of the stairway and thought this one was most interesting because of the turns and the angle of the shot. This was shot with a wide-angle lens (12mm). I processed this photo in both color and monochrome and asked my wife to pick the one she preferred. She liked the B&W best. So here it is.

Fern of Fancy
This fern, found in the woodlands of northeast Wisconsin, was in the final stages of unfurling. In the spring these ferns sprout from the ground and go through the process of spreading their highly divided leaves.
The delicate curl you see at the ends of the fronds will soon straighten out. These ferns can quickly take over an area of forest floor when they are growing in favorable conditions.

Thrice As Nice
Every spring I am drawn to the beauty and simplicity of trilliums in bloom. These were photographed on a recent hike through a wooded area of northeast Wisconsin.
If you like the trillium blooms, thank an ant. Ants are the ones who spread the seeds of the trillium plant. Ants gather the seeds and transport them away from the parent plant because they are attracted to the elaiosomes on the seeds. After learning this interesting fact I had to look up “elaiosomes.” Turns out, elaiosomes are fleshy structures that are attached to the seeds of many plant species.
