Ladies In White

The muted sunlight coming from behind these white tulips gave the flowers a unique quality. These early spring beauties were photographed at Pella, Iowa. Each year Pella has a tulip festival.

Slipping Toward Twilight

Shades of night are slipping into the River Walk area of downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
I was fortunate to spend some time doing some night photography with an experienced photographer from the Milwaukee area. It’s always great, when away from home, to have a photographer familiar with the location give you benefit of their experience.

Subtle Awakening
The Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse and pier stand ready to greet the sun as it rises above the Lake Michigan horizon.
I love the way the light dances on the beach with the gentle rhythm of the calm, early morning waves. The clouds above add another layer of flavorful light.

Owl Butterfly

I found this unique, very large butterfly on a recent visit to the Puelicher Butterfly Vivarium in the Milwaukee Public Museum. There were a variety of butterflies, but this one intrigued me the most because of it’s size.
According to Wikipedia…
An owl butterfly is a butterfly, in the genus Caligo, known for their huge eyespots, which resemble owls’ eyes. They are found in the rainforests and secondary forests of Mexico, Central, and South America.
Owl butterflies are very large, 65–200 mm (2.6–7.9 in), and fly only a few meters at a time, so avian predators have little difficulty in following them to their settling place. However, the butterflies preferentially fly in dusk, when few avian predators are around. The Latin name may possibly refer to their active periods. Caligo means darkness.

Tree Dwellers

It was a banner year for mushrooms in northeast Wisconsin. An abundance of rainfall seemed to keep them sprouting up to, and even beyond, the first frosts.
I thought it was unusual to see so many mushrooms growing on a tree trunk. These healthy specimens were found in the woods of northeast Wisconsin.
