Pick Your Poison

Wasp, Spider, Bugs, Insects, Together, Macro, Yellow Jacket

On a cool fall day, I uncovered my barbecue grill and found a large spider clinging to the grill cover.  The moment I spotted it, I ran into the house…to grab my camera, of course. As I was taking photos of the spider, a wasp buzzed into the shot. (An insect photo bomb!)

I took several shots of the pair before the winged one flew off. While together, they seemed to get along just fine; no signs of tension or animosity.

I’m not sure I’ve ever photographed a more unlikely pair…a more menacing pair…a more dangerous duo.

No insects, arachnids or photographers were injured or harmed in the production of this image.

Power Point Lighthouse Sunrise

Lighthouse Sunrise Kewaunee Wisconsin Lake Michigan
This is a Saturday morning view from the beach in Kewaunee, Wisconsin.

This particular sunrise provided a couple of nice images. You can see an image I posted from the same morning – an entirely different look – by viewing Dawn Highlights.

I used a star filter to get the effect you see here.  My favorite part of this image is the sun’s reflection off that first wave in the lower right part of the image.

Goldfinch on Lookout

American Goldfinch, Thistles, Purple Thistle, Goldfinch, Finch, Yellow, Bird

An male American Goldfinch looks over the surroundings, comfortably perched on a purple thistle.

This particular bird had a staring role in a couple of earlier posts – Fan Dancer and Watchful Eye.  He was not particularly shy and allowed me to get closer than most birds will. I was grateful.

Color Coordination – Autumn Leaves

Fall Colors, Autumn Leaves, Bright Leaves, Colorful Twig

A recent walk though some woods provided a lot of fall color.  On this trip, I focused on the small picture – close-up images of colorful leaves.

This caught my eye because of the combination of red and green against the dark background.

It seemed the smaller leaves were resisting the change. A youthful rebellion.

Sentinels – Fishing in the Fog

Monochrome, Fishing, Fishermen, Lake Michigan, Algoma, WI, B&W, Pier

Like sentinels with bayonets drawn, two fishermen are on high alert, ready for the bite.  These stalwart anglers are fishing for salmon in the early morning fog.  Their lures are plying the waters of Lake Michigan, off the pier at Algoma, Wisconsin.

Blind Side Attack

Bees, Thistle, Purple, Bee, Insect, Battle,

While working over a purple thistle, this bumble bee was attacked from behind by another competitor. The skirmish was short and seemed pretty insignificant. After bouncing off the backside of the busy bee, the aggressor simply flew away.  I’m guessing, it flew off to look for someone more its own size to pick on.

American Goldfinch Portrait

American Goldfinch, Female, Winter Plumage, Close-up

Isn’t she a beauty. This is a female American Goldfinch. She was kind enough to pose for this portrait on the suet feeder. She cam decked out in her Sunday best, winter plumage; not a feather out of place. I’m sure it was a cold day.

This is a photo I pulled up from the archives. It was taken a few years ago using my old Kodak Easyshare DX75909.  For a simple camera (compared to what I use today), it did some exceptional work.

Sara

pho·to·gen·ic   [foh-tuh-jen-ik]

adjective

1. forming an attractive subject for photography or having features that look well in a photograph: a photogenic face.

When you look up the word “photogenic” in the dictionary, you should see Sara’s photo.

No doubt about it.  Some people are photogenic.  I’m blessed to have a wife that is one of them.  However, she’s not always willing to jump in front of a clicking camera.  I usually have to do a little coaxing.

This was a shot from the Happy Birthday to Me session.
