Sunrise
Sea of Gulls
Seagulls take to flight before the Kewaunee, Wisconsin pier and lighthouse as the sun rises over Lake Michigan.
Yesterday I was on the beach to photograph the sunrise. I had finished started walking back to the car, ready to head home to grab breakfast before going to work. As I neared the parking lot, I noticed a large number of seagulls resting on the beach. I figured, as I got closer, they would eventually take off. So I prepared my camera for the shot.
When they began to take off, with my camera at arm’s length, I just pointed in their direction and snapped away – one-handed because I was carrying my tripod in the other. Looking directly into the brightness of the sun, I really couldn’t see what I was shooting, so I was rather pleased with what I saw when I downloaded the morning’s images to my computer.

Memorial Morning
I call this image Memorial Morning because it is one of several I took on Memorial Day, May 27, 2013.
It was a great morning for colorful skies. In this image the sun was above the lighthouse and filtered by thin clouds. It created a very interesting light. Taking the photo from shore gave me an opportunity to put some beach grass in the foreground – another point of interest.

Determined Presence
The sunrise was almost blocked by the cloud bank over Lake Michigan. Even with the clouds, the sun powered through. The dampening effect of the clouds was enough to give this scene an early evening feel.
This is the companion image to Blue Harbor – posted a few days ago.

Blue Harbor
A morning view of the sun rising over the Algoma, Wisconsin harbor with the piers and lighthouse in the distance.
The foreground is mostly mud and the footprints are from water foul that enjoy piddling around in there.

Magic In the Making
The sunrise comes pretty early in these parts this time of year. I made my way to the Algoma, Wisconsin harbor to try and catch the sunrise yesterday morning. The sunrise was a 5:35 am. It was a scramble for me to get there in time but, as you can see, I made it…and it was worth it.
This is the view just before the sun would break the surface of the Lake Michigan horizon.

Wave Action
I was photographing a sunrise from the beach in Kewaunee, WI. Usually the Lake Michigan is calm in the early morning hours. On this particular morning, there was a little bit of surf. I moved my tripod closer to the water’s edge and tried to capture the small waves as they splashed on the shore. This is one of those attempts.
Afterwards, I thought of several things I could have tried (camera settings) to make this better. I’ll have to give it another whirl…the next time I’m on the beach and the water is rough.

On the Horizon
Inferno In the Trees
The leafless trees of winter provide a minimal barrier to the blazing sun. This could be a sunset or sunrise; I’ll let you decide which one fits your mood.
We see a lot of sunrises and sunsets like this from our rural Wisconsin home. This tree line is across the field and a good distance from our house, so I used a long lens and tripod to capture it.

Early Morning Meeting
Sunrise Genesis
An early morning view of the Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse on Saturday, March 30, 2013.
This photo was taken at the very moment the sun began to breach the horizon. You can see it. It’s that short bright orange dash on the horizon to the right of the lighthouse.
