With the look on her face I can’t help but wonder, what was she thinking at the moment this photo was snapped.
This image was taken during an afternoon with family in Ohio. Our granddaughter was away from the group, exploring the surroundings at a park. As you can see, I was keeping my eye (and focus) on her and snapping photos.

Dawn Patrol
On any given morning, you can find Canada geese and sea gulls patrolling the area around the Kewaunee, WI lighthouse. They seem like a vigilant group; quick to sound an alarm when intruders are detected.
This was the scene yesterday morning from the beach just north of Selner Park, on the shore of Lake Michigan. I was able to get out early and snapped a number of nice shots. I’ll try to post more from this morning in the near future.

Deep Red Down
A bright, red maple leaf found its final resting place on the white stripe of a wet, city parking lot. The contrast in colors and textures caught my eye.
This is a rare posting from my cell phone’s camera. I don’t usually post cellphone photos because I prefer the higher quality of my DLSR, but I didn’t have my DSLR with me.
I was in Appleton for work and had just finished a quick lunch at a Panda Express. It was a cool, gray, drizzly day. While leaving the restaurant, I noticed this bright spot on the ground next to my vehicle. The only camera I had with me was my Samsung S6 cellphone. The leaf was resting on a stripe of the parking lot.

Deer Friends
A couple of white-tailed deer were sharing a morning moment. It looks like one buck might be telling secrets to his relaxing friend. In reality, a little grooming was taking place. The standing deer was using his tongue to clean the ear of the other.
I grabbed this image at the small zoo at Bruemmer Park in Kewaunee County, WI. To get this shot, I had to focus through the high fence that keeps their small herd contained.

Twigs in Transition
The leaves are changing. They are taking on their autumn colors…before they fall. These have a nice red glow about them with a slight hint of their former green.
I know I’ve been complaining about the lack of autumn colors in our area. Still, I’ve been able to find a few spots. Also, the colors may be getting better. I think I’m seeing more, anyway. I’ll have to make another excursion into the woods to see if I can find some worthwhile images.

Cruel Intentions
One person’s weed is another person’s flower. This one (a dried up thistle in the wild) just seems evil.
I snapped this photo on a recent hike thought the woods to find some autumn color. It wasn’t colorful, for sure, but I thought it was interesting – in gruesome kind of way.

Fall from Grace
On a recent hike through the woods – on the hunt for some autumn colors – I stumbled upon this colorful leaf resting on a branch and a log covered with a carpet of green moss.
The color combination and variety of textures caught my eye. There wasn’t much that caught my eye on this outing. The woods were not very vibrant. I was expecting to see a lot more color. I’m not sure our fall colors are going to be as brilliant as in the past few years. There’s still some time. We’ll see.

Beauty and a Beast
The delicate beauty of these sedum blossoms provide a stark contrast to the uninviting demeanor of a grasshopper who found a late summer resting spot.
My photography typically focuses on the beauty of nature. I’m sure many would not find the grasshopper to be “beautiful,” but I think it is. I find the structure and patterns in the design of this creature a work of beauty. Again, a contrast to the “pretty” of the flowers but a very cool and interesting subject.
Grasshoppers are insects and are probably the oldest living group of chewing herbivorous. I imagine this one has found a pleasant, final resting place.

Fare Thee Well
On September 16, 2017 there was a light layer of morning fog near the lighthouse at the mouth of the Kewaunee, WI harbor. The misty conditions managed to mute the sunrise over Lake Michigan.
If you look closely, you can see fishermen on the pier, near the lighthouse. Also, there’s a charter fishing boat shrouded by the fog, to the right of the lighthouse, on their way to deeper waters.

Beauty by Design
This colorful butterfly took some time to rest and feed on the sedum plants in our flower bed.
I’m always intrigued and impressed by the color and patterns in nature. Surely, any reasonable person can see, there is a master designer. One of the interesting aspects of seeing a butterfly this close is noticing the presence of hair on their back. You don’t really notice that when they are flitting about the flowers.
I’m not exactly sure what kind of butterfly this is. I spent some time trying to find another butterfly with similar color and patterns on the wings, but I was unable to spot one in my Google search. If you can identify this butterfly, I’d be interested in knowing.
